Anacron- 2011 (Believe)

Happy New Year from WhiskeyTeeth and Anacron!

Los Angeles underground mainstay Anacron has given us the exclusive to his inspirational 2011 jump off track "2011 (Believe)", which is the second internet release from his forthcoming remix album, The Facelift 2.

Following the theme of his previous New Year 2010 jump off track "2010 (Grow)", 2011 (Believe) serves as an audible advisor on the road to accomplishment. It's rare in this day and age to find an artist aiming to uplift and motivate his fans to achieve success, but Anacron does just that; intent on growing alongside members of the AnaManiacs movement. In Anacron's own words, "the journey towards your goals is much easier to bear when you have a traveling companion.

The track features the multi-talented musician remixing DJ Battlecat's "Enter the G-Spot" by adding his own vocals and playing the saxophone, grand piano, and drums on the track.

The download is yours below, as well as Anacron's previous New Year's track-- 2010 (Grow).

Here's to everyone's success in 2011!

RoQ'y TyRaiD continues his weekly series with his week 11 song, Podium, where he goes off on various social, political, and industry issues like only RoQ'y can.

Make sure to check out more RoQ'y TyRaiD here. His 2010 free album, The Milennium Man, made it to our top 10 Free Albums/Mix Tapes of 2010 list and is definitely one of our favorite new artists that we discovered last year.

Mally & The Sundance Kid- Cloud Culture

I'm glad that Minnesota's Mally & The Sundance Kid slipped this new track under the door before the ball dropped. This means WhiskeyTeeth's 2010 ends with two of my favorite new artists who will no doubt make a lot of noise in 2011.
Cloud Culture is a track that we believed would be an excellent way to exit the year 2010. It is a state of mind we find ourselves in when something good has happened and a celebration takes place.  So with this song it would only be appropriate to celebrate the accomplishments we have had over that past year... That's the whole reason we should have a toast!  With that said, enjoy the December installment of the Free On The 15th series and have a Happy New Year!!!

Arizona MC Savant links up with fellow Grand Canyon State spitters Random and Hexsagon and bring 2010 to a close with a neck breaking, 8-bit barrage from Bear McCreary and DN³.  Further elements of the song (including the instrumental, lyrics, Random's video commentary and more) can be downloaded here.

Nice way to close out a year, fellas!

Beat Maker Beat (aka Spacekid)- Paramind

Russian producer Beat Maker Beat (aka Spacekid) released one of the more underrated records of 2010 in MacroKosmos (peep our coverage here). A few days ago BMB added another flawless 2010 release before the new year cut off, which might sneak him up a few notches on my end of the year list for producers.

Paramind features BMB's signature spaced out production that is always pregnant with fuzzy samples, infectious waves of trippy electronica, and synthesized sex. The free download is below via bandcamp or sharebee. You can also purchase this 19 track banger for 1 measly buck (or more if you wish). It's worth it.

IZ-REAL- Paint & PistolS + More

Atlanta, Georgia spoken word poet/MC IZ-REAL will make your head spin. Combining a Breeze Brewinesque delivery with an electric mic presence, IZ's tracks take numerous spins to absorb but will always buzz the brain the same.

Recently, IZ released his @IZREAL mix tape featuring numerous guest spots from his Strange Gibberish family. The download below contains the new mix tape, along with a bonus track "Paint & PistolS" (which we have streamed below), and a download for his free EP with Mark Aubert.

Here are three of my favorite tracks below to get yourself familiar.

Anacron- Get Stoked!

Unsung heroes. You might read about them on page six of the newspaper or hear about them on the 4:30 am newscast, but, unfortunately, their capes never get to shimmer in the limelight for long.

After 15 years of rapping, singing, writing, producing, composing, DJing, breakdancing, and arranging classic Los Angeles hip hop, Anacron is preparing a heroic 2011 and feels that this is the year the unsung hero makes the front page and 6 o'clock news; this is the year where the hard work pays off and the underground "legends" become common lore.

As he awaits the release of his solo LP on Delicious Vinyl, Anacron plans to release four EPs in 2011, each produced completely by a fresh new producer to the underground game. "My goal in 2011 and the future is to begin exposing the world to new underground talent." Anacron told us in a recent email. "I feel that hip hop has become a mainstream of it's own, showing love and props to the same people over and over while new guys have such a hard time getting in and getting love."

Until Anacron begins to bless us with material from his new EPs, we bring you a video/single from 2010 that we overlooked in Get Stoked! The song was originally supposed to be on a solo album set to release in 2010, but instead will be featured on a forthcoming collaboration EP with Denmark producer KV Beats (who we covered earlier this year).  You can peep both the stream and video below.

Stay tuned to WhiskeyTeeth for more Anacron music (especially New Years Day). You can also familiarize yourself with an LA legend on his website, bandcamp, and twitter. If you aren't familiar with his catalog, get to youtubin' with this. The Netherworlds (Murs, Himself, Anacron) album is still my shit.

The BandSoup.com Project

Note: Any re-tweet, facebook post, email, or way of sharing this information/website is much appreciated. The ideas we have for this open, free, and pro-independent artist music site are very exciting to us and we are going to rely on heavy grassroots, word-of-mouth "marketing" to spread the good word. If you are an artist yourself, a rabid music fan with an open mind and ear, or know someone that is a musician-- tell them about us.

2011 is already shaping up to be my greatest year in my 28 years of living. How's that opening sentence for the world's most cynical independent hip hop blogger?

One of the main reasons is because I get to continue my work for BandSoup.com (programming, main website, blog, etc.) and help them achieve their 2011 goals after we received an exciting grant from the government. This grant is going to allow the BandSoup team to smooth out the website's interface, user experience, and will allow the site to take on the numerous creative ideas we came up with to improve on the initial idea.

If you are a rapper, producer, in a band (any genre), or consider yourself an avid music listener, I encourage you to visit the website, bookmark the affiliated blog, and/or upload/share your music with the thousands already in the BandSoup community around the world.

Please, check out/bookmark the site (the blog is currently being re-done and will have a new look in a few days). We appreciate anyone that signs up for an account as a listener and/or an artist as we continue to tweak and improve our system. If you have any questions, comments, or feedback please send an e-mail to ryan@bandsoup.com and I will forward it to the rest of the team.

Artists: To upload a song (or more), click here and sign up for an account (very fast, we only ask for an email) and then you can upload freely. Any artist that uploads at last one track is put on the main website and has the opportunity to be featured on the BandSoup blog.

Thank you to all that read WhiskeyTeeth and to the indie artists I'm always rooting for,
Ryan

The gatekeepers have fallen and the corporate filters have been removed. Now, all music can be discovered, shared, downloaded, promoted, and heard directly by the audience and the artists themselves. This democratization of the music industry, combined with technological advances in music equipment and recording, makes for an exciting time for music fans and artists alike.
Instead of the same four labels, traditional media outlets, and subjective gatekeepers telling us what we should want, we, the people, have direct access to all forms of creative inspiration and musical creations that can inspire and open our minds to new sounds and experiences. It's now OUR choice and OUR music.
Although the future of this new era is still unclear, what we do know is more people throughout the world have greater access to create, consume, and share music than ever before. This has allowed music participation to return to its primal roots where music was somethingeveryone, not just professionals and signed acts, participated in as part of their daily routine.
BandSoup does not wish to be a gatekeeper or a filter; instead, we wish to engage with experienced and un-experienced artists and fans on a daily basis and form a free, simple, and fun music community that everyone can enjoy. Artists upload their latest songs into theSoup Bowl, then listeners point and play. It's that simple. Songs can be saved, shared, or listened to anytime, anywhere.
BandSoup is not an archive of the past, it's a continuous flow of "now" music.

Top 10 Free Albums/Mix Tapes of the Year

Here are the Top 10 Free Albums/Mix Tapes of the Year (only one mix tape) according to Whiskey Teeth (or just me). I'm sure I missed a lot, but these are the freebies that received the most spins, shares, and I felt gave the blogosphere something different and refreshing to look forward to in the future. Thank you to all the artists that continually give their music to us for free. Don't forget about us music nerds when you get big.

10. Odd Future- Radical

Thoughts: Many like Earl and Tyler's solo freebies, but, in my opinion, neither carried enough umph to be put on an end of the year list. Odd Future has incredible potential, they have hypnotized the internet for the better half of 2010, and have a bushel of addicting singles, but they still lack experience and it shows in their compilations. I'm on the edge of my seat with what Earl and Tyler have to offer in the future, but I'd be lying if I said their music completely blows me away so far (the hype, reaction, and ethos is a different story).

Radical, a haphazard mix tape that features every single Odd Future member, is the best 2010 representation of the biggest internet buzzed act next to Lil B and it's why I chose it over Earl's self titled give away.

#'s 9-1 on the flip side!
9. Lee Bannon & Chuuwee- Hot n Ready

Thoughts: While many of the blogosphere's sheep bahhhh at a basket full of blow hards and overrated youngin's, a 19 year old from Sacramento, California slid under their radar. Chuuwee's collaboration with Lee Bannon sounds like a long lost demo tape from 1995 and showcases the young MCs immaculate throw back flow and potential. The sound quality is all over the place (I think that's a Lee Bannon thing that he does on purpose?), but fans of Fashawn and AZ will love the kid that sounds like a mashup between the two.

Download It

8. RoQ’y TyRaiD- The New Millenium Man

Thoughts: RoQ’y TyRaiD is a Phoenix, Arizona based MC that released his free album The New Millennium Man earlier this summer which featured RoQ'y terrorizing beats from Madlib, Jake One, Just Blaze and original production from The Baron Boys, Dn3, and Rie$go. I got hooked on RoQ'y's cynical, misanthropic content and after multiple listens got even more into his style, flow, and versatility. Definitely a slept on unveiling, but I know he'll be making noise in 2011 and beyond when you slow mother fuckers decide to catch up.

Download It

7. Batsauce- Summertime

Thoughts: I caught this little ray of sunshine from Jacksonville, FL producer Batsauce towards the end of the summer, which is constructed entirely from versions of Gershwin’s classic song ‘Summertime’, and it instantly became one of my favorite releases. The project features special guests The Perceptionists (Mr. Lif & Akrobatik), Mass Influence, Qwazaar, Baje One, Dillon, Chop, Paten Locke, Lady Daisey, and Wynton Kelly Stevenson. Underrated and overlooked-- what's new.

Download It

6. KON- Above the Clouds

Thoughts: Kon's introduction to the world has an impeccable sound. The versatile production from DJ Dyllema, Marcus Sebastion, The Individualz, and Kon himself will exercise your neck as Kon anchors the ship with his crystal clear cadence. The luminous feel of the EP gives a whole other meaning to its title, but is more than likely due to the simple touch of an MC/Producer that also holds a degree in music engineering and has produced/engineered for Ras Kass, O.C., Blahzay, and more.

Besides the EP's altostratus sound, Kon makes quite a first impression. Reminiscent of a fellow New York MC in Sene, his pen is heartfelt, thoughtful, and poetic; his flow is simplistic, precise, and digestible; and his ear for production near flawless.

As Kon prepares us for his debut full length LP, My Glorious Imperfection, we are left with a good feeling about his supposed weaknesses to come. In one debut EP/Demo, Kon has already proven worthy to pilot hip hop fans above the clouds for years to come. Buckle up.

5. Black EL & Ryan Durkin- Color Commentary

Thoughts: The Dick Vitale of Hip Hop shows his everlasting energy and excitement for music on his sophomore release, even more so than on his debut, A Major Minority, an almost impossible feat.
Black has definitely upped his game and has transformed from a diaper dandy into a PTPer with Ryan Durkin at his side.

Word is that this connection will continue, and if that's the case, so will the success. Black EL's voice is refreshing.

4. Dom Kennedy- From the Westside with Love

Thoughts: This is a freebie that I missed during my internet hiatus, but the first thing I downloaded once I returned and it never left the rotation. I don't know what it is about Dom, but he has that 'something' that crawls inside your head, infects, and lasts. His style is simple, nonchalant, and blunted, but is extremely infectious and replayable. All of his freebies have been dope, so if you aren't familiar yet-- get to it.

3. Outasight- Never Say Never

Thoughts: I've been supporting Outasight's movement (Rhymehouse, etc.) before he finally caught fire on the bigger blogs and the Yonkers, NY bred artist has only gotten better. This 2010 freebie gives fans a glimpse on his growth and a sneak peak into what I think his major label debut will sound like. Out of all the new artists that have popped up in the blogosphere in the past few years, Outa remains one of the most innovative and original MCs out there. I still believe he has the most potential to "blow up"-- it's only a matter of time. Never say never.

2. Danny Brown- The Hybrid

Thoughts: I only got into Danny Brown and The Hybrid about a month ago. If I had been on the Danny Brown bandwagon earlier, I would have handed over 2010 to Mr. Brown and called it a year (just peep what he dropped in 2010-- I haven't even gotten through half of it). The Hybrid is what you would get if Young Zee, Redman, and Lil Wayne became one MC, so this freebie was aptly titled.

Damu the Fudgemunk- Brooklyn Flower

New instrumental track from blooming DMV based producer, Damu the Fudgemunk. More information on the track is below (if you want more "DIG A LITTLE DEEPER"). Peace to all the sarcastic dinosaurs still roaming the internet.

You can purchase the limited 7" white label vinyl from here. I just saw that Damu moved his blogspot home page to Tumblr, make sure to re-bookmark.
Brooklyn Flower is a privately commissioned project in conjunction with Slice-of-Spice Records, and ReDef Records. The title track is a reworking of the Ramsey Lewis and Minnie Ripperton versions of the Charles Stepney classic, Les Fleurs. The intention of this track and project is a dedication for the birth of my daughter. These samples, and others deemed relevant, were referenced to Damu The Fudgemunk, when the project was first commissioned in late 2009, and as expected he produced something quite extraordinary and sublime. This is not a track he created for himself, or intended for commercial release.

Top 10 Hip Hop Albums of the Year

It took me awhile to catch up with what I missed this Spring, but I have listened to everything I wanted (and you forced me) to hear in 2010. With that being said, here is WhiskeyTeeth's Top 10 Hip Hop Albums of the Year list. The winner receives that beautiful award pictured above, which is presented to you by Big Lots.

10. Shad- TSOL (Black Box Recordings- May 25th [Canada]/October 5th [USA])

Thoughts: Canadian hip hop gets a bad wrap (mostly because a lot of it is bad rap), but Shad has proven himself more than worthy to the snarky and pretentious United States hip hop elite, especially with his acclaimed 2010 release, TSOL.  Seamless, conceptual, intelligent, and full of humor-- Shad somehow topped 2007's The Old Prince and gave underground hip hop fans a canuck to pull for.

#9-1 on the flip side!

9. Moe Pope- Life After God (Brick Records- July 27th)

Thoughts: If WhiskeyTeeth had a Top 10 Underrated Albums of the Year category, you can bet your ass Moe Pope and Rain's project would top that list. After numerous overlooked collaborations with Electric, Headnodic, Project Move, and Mission that never went the distance, Moe Pope has found his comfort zone and an emerging producer he can flourish with. I'm hoping that this wasn't a one and done.

8. Atmosphere- To All My Friends, Blood Makes the Blade Holy (Rhymesayers- September 7th)

Thoughts: Am I the only one that thinks Atmosphere has only gotten better with time? From Seven's Travels and on, my love for Slug and Ant has grown exponentially and their 2010 double EP has me loving them even more. Over a pool of classic rock guitars, organ stabs, and crisp drums, Slug slangs slurred grown man raps that a lot of hip hop heads in their late twenties/early thirties will connect with.

7. Kokayi- Robots & Dinosaurs (QN5-August 28th)

Thoughts: The official follow-up to 2008’s Mass Instructions, Robots & Dinosaurs is a self-produced tour de force that showcases the Grammy-nominated artist’s varied talents on every track. With lush layers of live instrumentation, soulfully expressive sung-vocals and wordplay galore, Kokayi has managed to create a work that highlights the spaces between the extremes of modern pop, rock & hip hop and subsequently deletes them. One of the most exciting and unexpected independent releases of 2010-- why aren't more people excited about this?

6. Kanye West- My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasty (Roc-A-Fella Records- November 22nd)

Thoughts: Out of the ten, this is the one that I have sat with the least and the only record that affected me outside of the music that it contained. Accidental genius or not, Kanye knows how to grab this generation's attention and keep it. Even though I think his media theatrics, ego, 30 minute film school reject video, and live performances are comedy skits, I think any lunatic artist that can control this generation like he does deserves a round of applause. Plus his shit sounds good.

5. Ceschi Ramos- The One Man Band Broke Up (Equinox- June 28th)

Thoughts: Ceschi is a genius. I became a huge fan after listening to the self titled Toca album (I would give my life savings to members of Toca if it would help them pull off another album), which made me dig into Ceschi's solo catalog. His third solo album is without a doubt his magnum opus and one of 2010's must hear albums. It is definitely an album you have to sit with, absorb, and give multiple listens, but the reward is well worth the efforts. Combining hip hop, folk, and psychadelic rock, The One Man Band Broke Up tells the story of a well-traveled musician at odds with the industry and himself. Ceschi speaks through the character of Julius & the Bearded Saviour as he weaves narratives about the perils of the road, failure and self-destruction.

4. Big Boi- Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty (Purple Ribbon- July 5th)

Thoughts: Bangarang.

3. Open Mike Eagle- Unapologetic Art Rap (Mush Records- May 11th)

Thoughts: Yes, in my world, Open Mike Eagle's debut solo album ranks above both Big Boi and Kanye West at the end of the year. If I wasn't a big enough Swim Team/OME fan boy before, Unapologetic Art Rap put the scoop of hummus on top and made me one for life. The self proclaimed 'nutcase displaying an obvious what the fuck face' will grab your attention with his untouchable rhyme schemes, playful concepts, and intelligent humor and make your blunt smoke smile and sway to his weird wordplay and infectious hooks. But you have to have enough patience to catch all that he throws at you.

It took awhile for internet nerds and blogosphere bums to take to Homeboy Sandman, so it's only a matter of time before more people catch on to Open Mike's genius-- a genius that, in my opinion, will take him further than any Blowedian has ever gone before. You can see what I mean in the I Rock (For the Unemployed) Remix and Haircut.

2. Intuition- Girls Like Me (Hellfyre Club- February 9th)

Thoughts: For a first quarter release in the middle of the ADD generation, Intuition's sophomore album held up extremely well. Not only did this album feature some of the best production of 2010 (courtesy of emerging Los Angeles beatsmith Equilibrum), but it was a 15-track clinic on the long lost art of song sequencing. Combine these two vital components with Intuition's easy to digest style and well penned tales of a directionless man in his mid 20's that's prone to complacency, womanizing, and debauchery, you got yourself the go to album for any 18-33 year old white boy for years to come. Asher Roth who?

On top with having a lot of emotional connections to Intuition's lyrics ("Don't Try" plays when I walk down the street), Girls Like Me allowed me to musically connect with a lot of special ladies in my life that would have never listened (or given a chance) to this type of music. You can't say that for many new  artists or albums. I think this says a lot about what Intuition and Equalibrum accomplished and what they will accomplish in the future.

1. The Roots- How I Got Over (Def Jam- June 22nd)

Thoughts: They did it again and no one should be surprised.

Kruse- Never Heard About It ft. Pigeon John

Kruse is a talented up and coming MC/Producer from Los Angeles, California that you might not know about. His 2007 debut album, True Stories, is a record he wrote, produced, and mixed himself, while calling upon numerous underground "legends" (Luckyiam, Eligh, Sunspot Jonz, etc.) to fill in a few vocal guest spots. Kruse has been quiet since his debut record, but recently popped up with a brand new single to celebrate his forthcoming free EP, Kruse Light. The new single, Never Heard About It, features the playful Pigeon John on the hook and La La's and Eligh on the beat.

J-Zen- The Sextape

With a stack of dusty VHS tapes, French producer J-Zen has constructed hip hop's first beat tape made of music and vocal samples from 1970's porno films. In between the moans, screaming orgasms, and fuck me in my ass taunts, J-Zen's ability to flip cheesy funk, earthy flutes, and casio stabs into head noddin' hip hop beats is just as astounding as the size of 1970's bush and areola.

Free Album: Open Mike Eagle- Art Rap After Party EP

"Everybody's rapping, everybody's selling clothes, everybody's picture taking, shooting videos...everyday in the city of L.A. is everybody's birthday," goes the first hook on Open Mike Eagle's "Art Rap After Party EP" -- a record that solidifies the Chicago-born Angeleno-based rapper as arguably the finest (and funniest) chronicler of the seedy and mustache-marred L.A. underworld.
The follow-up to this year's stellar "Unapologetic Art Rap," Mike Eagle II rambles through the dregs of his new home's coked-out, jungle-juiced wastelands, getting wasted to stay sane. He sarcastically compliments a girl on her asymmetrical haircut, telling her that he hopes she stays ahead of the trends. Then he tells her that she dresses like the Macho Man, Randy Savage.
Those with one-dimensional interpretations might wrongly brand this hipster rap, but Mike is no hipster. He dresses more GQ than Vice and boasts a surliness that could get him tossed from Intelligentsia. Rather than stridently complain, he fulminates against his targets with a caustic wit and an ironic sense reminiscent of a less solipcistic Das Racist. Indeed, Eagle's tangents are even more searing and cogent. He attacks racists for assuming he's going to play 2Pac on a jukebox when he just wants to play "Rock the Casbah." He creates an absurd cosmology -- a 100 proof nightmare filled with wanna-be nabobs and those who have read too much Nabokov.
Balancing his smarts with endearing self-deprecation, he never lapses into self-seriousness. Eagle mocks himself for sending out embarrassing texts, scheming on unfortunate women, and for his own hypocrisy. Mush records has given Pop & Hiss permission to give away the EP for free for the next two weeks. Open Mike Eagle does the dirty work-- throwing Art-Rap after-parties so you don't have to. After all, it's far preferential to eat hummus in solitude. (Be forewarned, the download contains some salty language.)
