Intuition- I Ruined These Songs For You Too

A year after his first stab at ruining gems from Amy Winehouse, The Black Keys, Portishead, and Grizzly Bear, emerging Los Angeles MC Intuition is back with a brand new bag of unauthorized collaborations. Instead of tackling obvious trendy remix bands like Toro Y Moi and Little Dragon, Intuition challenges music nerds of all shapes, sizes, and external hard drive capacities by manipulating more obscure songs from Jai Paul, Icona Pop, Javelin, and Jessica Lee Mayfield and putting his own spin on less celebrated cuts from headliners such as Sublime, Erykah Badu, The Strokes, and Raphael Saadiq.

Ruined or renewed? You be the judge.

Track List:
01. Jai Paul - BTSTU (feat. Intuition)
02. Icona Pop - Manners (feat. Intuition)
03. Phantogram - When I'm Small (feat. Intuition)
04. Sublime - Get out (feat. Intuition)
05. Neon Indian - Deadbeat Summer (feat. Intuition)
06. Javelin - Susie Cues (feat. Intuition)
07. Frank Ocean - Swim Good (feat. Intuition)
08. Jessica Lea Mayfield - Our Hearts Are Wrong (feat. Intuition)
09. The Strokes - Under The Cover of Darkness (feat. Intuition)
10. Raphael  Saadiq - Good Man (feat. Intuition)
11. Erykah Badu - Soldier (feat. Intuition)

News: Zion I & The Grouch- Heroes in the Healing of the Nation

At last! West Coast hip-hop stalwarts Zion I & The Grouch  return with their sophomore collaborative effort "Heroes in the Healing of the Nation ".  The long-awaited follow-up to the group's 2006 critically acclaimed, "Heroes in the City of Dope " could not arrive at a more fitting hour.

MaLLy & The Sundance Kid- Once We're Kings

One of my favorite new groups from 2010 has dropped their first track of 2011 and it's my favorite track from them so far! On "Once We're Kings"MaLLy & The Sundance Kid churn up an unforgivable mix of lyricism and production that instantly lets everybody know that the duo is continuing to solidify their spot and strive to never disappoint or sacrifice quality in 2011. As the emerging duo said in an email, "Truthfully, WE GOT THIS and will consistently progress with our own brand of authenticity in a world where unoriginality is a normalcy."

I believe 'em. Make sure to check out or past coverage here so you can get familiar.

Savant- Make Your Move

Once again Savant draws heat from the UK sonic pool, this time linking up with electronic music wizard Luke Vibert (aka Wagon Christ) for the OHHLA/ RapReviews and Nora Perez assisted "Make Your Move". The bouncy, anthemic song features lines paying tribute to some of the bar slinger's favorite emcees and hip hop entities, ranging from the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, Mos Def and Black Thought to Jay-Z, Redman and Ludacris, all the while lacing some familiar components of the "Golden Era" with a modern flair. Further correlating elements of the song (including the original instrumental, lyrics, Savant's audio commentary and more) can be downloaded at http://www.ohhla.com/Savant/index.html.

No Need to Celebrate by Craig S. Jenkins

When I heard that World Star Hip Hop was taken down, I began celebrating with the rest of the "intelligent hip hop community". At the time, my twitter feed was mostly full of celebration and bewilderment, but there was one man that seemed genuinely upset at the reaction of bloggers and journalists. I immediately thought that this was a classic case of pseudo-hispteria-- where someone on the internet purposely chooses the opposite side of a big internet trend or argument just to be different and swim against the stream-- but then I thought, maybe he does have something to say? So, as I rolled my eyes at his final tweet comparing WSHH haters to female Smurfs, I asked Craig to write about it and told him I would post his reaction. To be honest, I thought he would never do it. I also thought he wouldn't have a good enough point for me to change my mind.

I was wrong.

I need to start with a disclaimer. The views detailed below are not the views of Whiskey Teeth. The homie Ryan was courteous enough to offer me a forum for my wild and crazy thoughts. Well, technically, he kinda asked me to write about said wild and crazy thoughts, so maybe he is to blame for the existence of this piece? Anyhow:

Last night we had a quick scare. Last night it looked like World Star Hip Hop was gone for good. The site vanished briefly, and 50 Cent, who filed a lawsuit against them for using his likeness without permission back in 09, immediately took credit for the outage. 50 copped to lying, and it was later rumored that a stolen intellectual property complaint from a Youtube vlogger might have been to blame. Regardless of the culprit, the news about World Star potentially shuttering broke to more than a little premature gravestone tap dancing by plenty of happy hip hop bloggers. Personally, I didn’t see what was so funny.

Surely the almost unilateral glee World Star’s apparent death engendered is a function of people’s dissatisfaction with the content that the site hosts. The volatile cocktail of shameless stripper showcases, goon rapper music videos, industry gossip, and cell phone footage of public ass whoopings that is World Star’s daily bread rubs people the wrong way. It ain’t classy. The site as a whole is a bad look for hip hop, for humanity, for all bipedal life with eyes and ears, really. Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Then why are you defending them?”

Here goes nothing: Blog closures, whether they’re the product of government investigations (like the Thanksgiving clampdown that temporarily sidelined OnSmash), angry artists with a vendetta (50, you dirty, filthy liar, you!), or kneejerk Google/Yahoo/Wordpress/etc. crackdowns (too many sites to name), are not good news for anyone with a website. I don’t care what blog it is. I don’t care how foolish or how deplorable it is. The shit ain’t a victory. What it is is a sign that certain factions have their eyes trained on the online hip hop community, and they’re willing and able to destroy or severely impair sites at will. Ain’t nothin funny about that.

Cheering the closure of a blog just because you don’t like the content is self-righteous and shortsighted. Whether you like it or not, World Star deserves to exist. It paints as much of a picture of modern hip hop culture as any other site does. World Star’s is a seedy, creepy, pathetic, and outrageous picture, yes, but a real one nevertheless. If you don’t like their voice, sing louder. Don’t sit back and applaud when outside forces take action against them that don’t know either of you from a hole in the wall. It’s not constructive.

Last night on Twitter, I likened the behavior to “Smurfette laughing while Gargamel captures Vanity.” Point being, bloggers, instead of all the smirking, you should be paying careful attention. You should have your back up plan in place. You should know what to do if there’s an attack on your site. For all you know, you’re next. While you’re busy chuckling about another man’s downfall, yours might be in the works. That’s the problem with bloggers. Too many of y’all seem to think this is a game of oneupsmanship. This ain’t either me or him or her. When things go bad, we all suffer. Am I the only one that sees this?

I need a drink. Jameson, please?

Video: Redd Foxx (Alpha MC & VerBS)- Cancer Chicks

Swim Team MCs Alpha MC and VerBS are hip hop's latest tag team known as Redd Foxx. Energetic, infectious, and colorful are three adjectives that best describe them as solo acts, but when combined their best traits magnify, making Redd Foxx one of the most interesting and fun duos to watch out for in 2011.

Here is their debut video "Cancer Chicks". Directed by Adam Stanzak, shot by Tony Oberstar and brought to you by Oh Boy Films.

Also, check out the three promo videos Redd Foxx shot before the release of Cancer Chicks here, here, and here.

Philadelphia hip hop quartet Writtenhouse, made up of Charlie K, Chris Conway, Kush Shalimar and Somerville Sleeves, are preparing the release of their new album, While You Were Sleeping, aimed to release on February 15th. The first taste of the new album comes by the way of "Sticky", a short two minute solo appetizer that sets the precedent for Writtenhouse's future. It's no wonder that these Philly bred hip hoppers were WhiskeyTeeth's most downloaded group in 2010.

News: Blue to Release Amnesia EP

Los Angeles MC/producer Blu has been steadily bubbling up from the underground with a string of releases including collaborations with fellow LA-based producers Exile, Ta'Raach, and Mainframe. Blu's been bubbling so much, in fact, that he's currently working hard on his major label debut (that's right, Warner Brothers), so in the meantime the freshly founded New World Color imprint is set to release an EP based on Blu's standout track from his 2009 Her Favorite Colo(u)r mixtape, "Amnesia." The Amnesia EP will contain three previously released Blu tracks and a new track entitled "Amnesia(Rewind)" along with instrumentals for all but one of the tunes. Considering most of Blu's material lives somewhere on the vast internet in mixtape and MP3 form, this EP should prove to be of the more comprehensive releases of the artist's material to date. You can stream the title track from the EP above, as well as check out the full tracklist below. The Amnesia EP will be released February 15 in digital form and March 1 in 10" vinyl format. (via)

Tracklist:
Side A
1. Amnesia(Original)
2. Amnesia(Instrumental)
3. Amnesia(Remind)
4. Amnesia(RewindInstrumental)
Side B
1. Since(Original)

Latest and last leak from DJ K.O. and his last EP from his slept on Living Out a State of Mind series (which has now reached Volume 12). Hail Mary Mallon

Hail Mary Mallon is Aesop Rock, Rob Sonic, and DJ Big Wiz and their forthcoming album has had the internet abuzz since the release of "D-Up" on the Definitive Jux Presents 4 compilation. Recently, a slew of promo videos with the trio have surfaced that feature raps, cuts, laughs, and wrinkled polos courtesy of Rob Sonic. Here is the latest quicky vid for a song called "Garfield" that HMM have been working on, along with other videos from the past/present.

WhiskeyTeeth introduced Quincy Vidal to the blogosphere in late 2010, but I'm not satisfied with the response so far. Where are all my jazzy hip hop fans, native tongue lovers, orbiters of the Digable Planets?

I'll keep trying...

Here is a dope "EPK" for the young duo that, in my opinion, oozed an endless amount of talent and potential on their freebie debut album, Cookin' in Brooklyn. After you check out of the EPK, you can download the album for free (or choose your own price).

Video: Benny Tones- Chrysalis

For those that fell in love with New Zealand's electro-soul group Electric Wire Hustle, their sound engineer's music will hit a similar spot. Here is Benny Tones' latest video from his forthcoming album, Chrysalis, set to release in April of this year on BBE Records.
Chrysalis was the last track to be made for the album so has a lot of influences from the sounds I have been listening to lately, a lot more on the futuristic tip. Wanted to put my own spin on the really FX heavy really produced sound but still keep the big spacious floaty vibe. I also worked with a vocalist by the name of Sacha Vee who I had done some work for in the past. She's a jazz trained vocalist so I wanted to see what happened when I gave her something way out of her musical spectrum. The result was this crazy fusion of styles that came out sounding quite different.

Free Indie Rock Album: Turning Torso- Walker

Turning Torso is the instrumental rock project from an unknown 20 year old guitarist/producer from Mexico named David Sánchez. On his debut album, Walker, David mashes up waves of dreamy guitar notes with islands of digital drums and psychedelic noises, forming a serene instrumental experience comparable to the breakdowns of Minus the Bear, Explosions in the Sky, and Bibio.

I think what the young David Sánchez created in his bedroom studio with an electric guitar and modest recording tools is intriguing and full of potential. This album is a small moment in music where we can thank technology and embrace what it can do for emerging musicians on a budget.

I've been debating doing a podcast for Whiskey Teeth for a long time now, but really do not like my voice on the radio (I used to do AM sports radio in Florida and wept in my room when I heard it played back), so I think it's really dope that Open Mike Eagle decided to open his mic at home and talk at us while playing his favorite tunes.

Free EP: Cute Attack- Self Titled

Dropping gems in a studio that's nestled in between Bellingham Bay and Lummi Island is a new trip hop duo made up of producer Chance Random and folk singer-songwriter Jenni Potts, better known as Cute Attack. Their new self titled release, which is now available on Bandcamp with a name your own price tag, is a short, simple, and sweet ride through a lost and forgotten world of what I call therapeutic hip hop, known to many as trip hop.

Haunted by Jenni Potts' vocals, Chance Random's beats creep cautiously around her lyrics, but find solace in her warm breath, embracing each note thoughtfully. The chemistry between the two is obvious, and while the length of the record might shock listeners the first go around, they will soon find the perfection in its editing and the beauty in its clarity.

Droop-E is another artist that I got into in 2010 after coming across his slept on, Sade influenced Blvck Diamond EP. I dug him more so for his production than his rhyming ability, but on this new video he shows an entirely different side and style than he did on the EP. Watch out for the kid (E-40's kid that is)-- double threat from the Bay!

Iz-Real & Icky Slick- The Izslickulus Package?

Atlanta, Georgia spoken word poet/MC IZ-REAL will make your head spin. On The Izslickulus Package?, Iz connects with fellow weirdo MC Icky Slick to drop deviant rhymes over subterranean soundscapes from DJ Dredi.

Sidenote: For all you old underground heads reading this, does anyone get that same nostalgic feeling by listening to Iz-Real's stuff? It could easily be mistaken for a late 90's underground demo tape.

Free (or Name Your Own Price) Indie Rock Album: Jeremy Lee Given- Old Flames

Another artists I came across doing stuff for BandSoup. Very nice debut from a relatively unknown artist out of Boston. If you dig Bon Iver, Band of Horses, or Department of Eagles, I'd recommend.

If you are a fan and follower of the current indie rock ethos, Jeremy Lee Given is going to make your head spin. Soaking up influences from some of indie rock's most lauded bands and solo artists, Given's debut album, Old Flames, listens like a greatest hits compilation from the genre's last five years. Spread throughout the album's 9-tracks are hints of Bon Iver, Department of Eagles, Band of Horses, and Vampire Weekend, giving Old Flames a smooth and sprightly taste, despite it being a brazen brew of moods that will numb your entire body once swallowed and digested.

Read More/Free Download on the flip side.

Besides the obvious comparisons one could make about Jeremy Lee Given's voice, there is a lot to be said about the Knoxville born, Boston based singer-songwriter. His vocals, both tranquil and interesting, are pleasant to take in and intriguing enough to repeat; his song construction and sequencing impeccable and clean; and his songwriting skills polished and endearing. If you are a fan of moody indie rock, JLG is a must listen and his latest record holds its own with the most praised folk records of last year.

Old Flames is available via Given's bandcamp page for $0-whatever you want to give. Take a listen, soak it in, let the old flames burn and warm your soul.

Dem One- Battlin' My Demons ft. Motion Man + Time Line Video

Representing San Jose, California, MC Dem One is looking to stun a new audience with a gallery of vivid audial paintings that capture the South Bay underworld where he resides. Audio Still Life, which was released via digital retailers today, does just that as Dem glides over a fog of vintage underground production and gives hip hop heads a glimpse into his mind, life, and soul. Half conscious rap, half archtypical underground hip hop-- Dem One's debut does the job for the fans that have yet to trade in their hoodies for a stash of v-necks.

Anacron- Facelift 2: Artofficial Attributes

Los Angeles MC Anacron has just dropped the follow up to his 2009 Facelift remix project, Facelift 2: Artofficial Attributes. Miles beyond the typical hip-hop "mixtape," Anacron employs his talents as a producer, instrumentalist, rapper, and singer to morph 12 previously crafted tunes into completely evolved (and revolved) interpretations.

From Robin Thicke to Toro Y Moi, Anacron's remixes are infectious rather than pretentious. One of the few tasteful remix projects that you will hear-- free of charge! Make sure to check out the first edition of Facelift, which is also available for free on Bandcamp.

Free Indie Rock Album: The Juliets- Self Titled

I don't post much indie rock on here, but I came across this band while doing some stuff for the other site. Good stuff out of Detroit.

Fronted by pianist Jeremy Freer and supported by a classical collective made up of violinist Sara Myers, cellist Kaylan Mitchell, bassist Ashton Hopkins, and drummer Jax Phillips, The Juliets are the new pride of Detroit and the emerging Michigan music scene.

Read More/Free Download on the Flip Side

After being formed in late 2008, The Juliets began to construct classically influenced pop songs over bottles of red wine. Within the fermented grapes they found truth in sound and began to lay down their debut self titled album. The debut, which was released in February of 2010, is one of the indie pop genre's most slept on albums of the year; a flawless unveiling full of infectious melodies, masterfully designed compositions, and sublime strings. A true masterpiece that is tragically unknown.

What makes The Juliets' self titled album an even more powerful piece of work is its ability to cover every human emotion cohesively. From sweet and hopeful to glum and forlorn; from confident and full of pride to fearful and disgraced; from a place of love to a house of hate-- The Juliets make schizophrenia sound both beautiful and persistent, making the mad houses contained in our brains erupt in joy as the record spins and spins.

What The Juliets have accomplished in their first outing as a band is triumphant. Their gallant and flourishing ornamentations go unmatched throughout the industry and soon enough their brave explorations in sound will be lauded and these baroques with backbone will be adored.

IMAKEMADBEATS- I Bet ft. Von Pea, J Freedome & Xodus

Following the 2010 two-part EP Daylight/Nightlight, IMAKEMADBEATS is getting ready to drop his debut solo album, self titled IMAKEMADBEATS, with the release of the album's first leak "I Bet." Co-produced with Greg Barbone, the track sees Brooklynite Von Pea of Tanya Morgan, Toronto's own J Freedome, and Xodus on the vocals, giving a soulful laid back introduction to first time listeners and a hint as to what fans can expect from IMMB's new album. The producer, who splits his time between Orlando and his current hometown Memphis, knew exactly what he wanted this song to encompass once the beat was made and so brought together these particular MCs to make it happen, "I wanted Von Pea on the song because I love his laid-back carefree style," says IMMB of his goal for the track, noting that he "thought it would mesh perfectly with fellow Doxsideartist J Freedome's approach."

To coincide with the release of IMMB's album, Doxside Music Group are launching a stickering contest, giving fans a chance to get involved in the IMAKEMADBEATS movement. With prizing and special limited-edition giveaways to be awarded for the most creative, funny and daring tags, fans have added incentive to get involved and can find out more info by visiting imakemadbeats.com
