I think Preach got a little blog love from this record earlier this Summer, but since it just released this past week I thought I'd bless it with another well deserved post.
MC Preach Jacobs from Columbia, South Carolina teams up with Denz to bring us the new EP, Maple Street Sessions; an 8-track oddysey through Jacobs' funky, Native Tongue inspired musings and a record that should shake up the Carolinas, which have had the same wall of sound in independent hip hop for years.
MC Doc Wattson, the big man representing his mid west home of Illinois, has teamed up with loop lunatic, Visto, to bring us The Native Stranger EP (which is now available on CDBaby for $5.95). The 8-track EP is a perfect introduction to Wattson's playful storytelling and sincere outlooks on a young man's life, as well as Visto's versatile beats that are masked with a stern and gloomy visage.
Below are three tracks from the EP, which is available to cop today. Support the up and coming independents!
Ever since I opened my first website, I have been following a relatively unknown group from Detroit called The Regiment. MCs OSI and IseQold were one of the few high points of the Rawkus 50 campaign with their record, The Come Up, and continued their success forward with various free mixtapes and EPs.
This time around, The Regiment connects with Dutch producer, Solution, for a remix project that features 6 remixes of tracks from their latest EP, The New Beginning, and one fresh new track that shows off the chemistry and what's in store for the future with this newly formed trio known collectively as Subliminal Thoughts.
Peep the free EP download and one track from the album below. I also added their "Old School Vibe" video too.
As a prequel to El Da Sensei’s Global Takeover Part 2, produced entirely by The Returners, the globalized MC/Producer trifecta released The Money EP this past Tuesday, October 27th.The new EP takes three previously released records form the first Global Takeover and adds two new tracks with “Ain’t Trippin” ft. Ghettosocks & Timbuktu and “Money (Part 2)” ft. Beneficence, Kaze & Torae, which can be downloaded below.
The big day is finally here for fans of DMV triumvirate Diamond District. Their debut full-length album, In The Ruff, is out today via Mello Music Group. The album, which features two brand new tracks from the group as well as their hard to come by material from a limited release this spring, is available in stores and on iTunes.
One of the just-released tracks is "Something For Y'all," produced by Kev Brown. While District member Oddisee produces the vast majority of Diamond District's songs himself, working with Brown hardly involved leaving the group's comfort zone. "Working with Kev is honestly keeping it in-house – he founded the Low Budget Crew and gave birth to everything that I'm doing right now. We wanted that signature Kev Brown sound- grimy soul."
The slept on Lonestar loop master returns with the Halloween glazed edition of his Snack Pack instrumental album series. This time around, Rob Viktum adds razors to his musical candy apple, which adds a darker feel to his usually upbeat tracks. Want a hip hop halloween? Let this be your soundtrack with samples from various slasher & horror flicks!

Infectious, quirky, original-- a triple threat of adjectives that can easily be copy/pasted under every single one of Open Mike Eagle's leaked singles over the past year. The Swim Team/Thirsty Fish team captain remains one of the most interesting artists blooming within LA's hip hop sub-culture in '09 after the release of his fantastic "best of" Pre-meditated Folly Mixtape and the surplus of Swim Team features where Open Mike seems to steal the show every time.
Below is his Steady Bloggin' exclusive EP, Another Roadside Attraction, featuring weird wiggling wordplay and sardonic stories that only this SoCal Scorpio can spill.

This life's a gamble, you can either play your hand, or you can fold...right where you stand.
The wild fire from Los Angeles, California continues as recent High School graduate, Versis, tosses us his brand new single "All In" featuring a signature jazz foundation from the fingertips of the Swedish sound sorcerer, Pajozo.
It's been quite a year so far for Versis. Make sure to check out his EP from earlier in '09, Synergy EP, here.
If you are a fan of independent hip hop then you already know about the Living Legends and their prestigous history that spans over 55 group/solo records since their unveiling in the early nineties. The 8 member California collective continue their reign into 2009 with already stellar showings from The Grouch & Eligh (Say G&E, On Sacred Ground w/ Jo Wilkinson), Bicasso (Rebel Musiq), and Aesop (Living the Dream While Awake), but many have overlooked the releases from one of the better LL members-- Scarub.
First, in early March, Scarub teamed up with Very to bring as The Classic EP; a 6 track record laced with loud and luminous loops, beastly bass, and feel good tunes that fit perfectly with the flower blooming season it appeared in. Then, earlier this month, the duo let loose their lively Afro Classics LP, Classic Rock, which is filled to the brim with infectious samples and playful poetics as Scarub and Very coast over commotion from producers Eligh, Fat Jack, Scarub, Style Misia, Mustafa Beats, and more. Two sonically accomplished records that haven't come close to reaching the audience they deserve.
Below, I shine a spotlight on three of my favorite tracks from the LP and dig up two of my favorites from the EP. Where you at?
Black ELement told me a few days ago that there is still a heartbeat in Boston and it beats in the boisterous chest of Boycott Blues; a ghetto philosopher that recently released one of 2009's most slept album records, Irony, via Brick Records/Sun Moon.
Executive produced by one of Boston's most celebrated artists in MC/Producer Insight, Boycott's debut album is blanketed in a gloomy groundwork that pushes his moody musings into another level of ruminative rhyming. All can be seen in the three sample tracks I have provided below. Irony is in stores now.

Edit: Brought this back to the top as the week comes to an end. Check back every week for 'blog buzz' and the week's best indie hip hop cuts.
Notes: The Berlin beatsmith does it again with this infectious electro banger that slithers its way around Amenta's haunting vocals from beginning to end. She sounds a lot like the chick from Little Dragon.
Download: Greenhouse (Blueprint & Illogic)- Gettin' There Notes:Blueprint & Illogic are back at it again teasing the world wide web with a new leak from their upcoming EP, Electric Purgatory, which will be released November 24th via Weightless Records. The first in a two part series that will be available for free download. A CD version (accompanied with instrumentals and a poster) will then be made available for purchase at weightless.net.
Serving as a follow up to his beautiful Odd Summer EP, DMV drum dropper, Oddisee, tosses up another free album download full of his signature soul slapped symphonies. Don't you dare forget about the official release of Diamond District's "In the Ruff," which is set to release on October 27th via Mello Music.

Representing the 818 and all binge drinking b-boys dwelling alongside the Pacific, Tha Alkaholiks are one of the West Coast's most beloved and consistent hip hop acts off all time. Since their unveiling in 1992, Catastrophe (Tash), J-Ro, and E-Swift have laced the culture with five neck breakin' records full of thunderous funk fueled beats and raucous rhymes that are essential for any pre-game kickback.
I put together this mix because, as hip hop fans, we all know how hard it is to please a crowd with our favorite underground records (Despite popular pasty belief, Jedi Mind Tricks' "Uncommon Valor" wont get the panties droppin', fellas). But Tha Liks are one of the few collectives with music that can appeal to a wide range of personalities and tastes. Want to set off a melting pot party full of sorority blonds, exchange students, and skinny jean kids, while satisfying your love for rap wax? Spin the first 5 tracks of this mix and watch the mind state become one.
'Cuz with Tha Liks there is only one state of mind, one mission, and that's to: drink, smoke, party your ass off!
