Free EP/Album: Nemo Achida- The North Star EP

Don't call it a comeback, I've been here for years...

The feisty EP would say if it could speak. It has been around the industry for years, but it wasn't until recently that the format became the weapon of choice in independent hip hop. In 2010, we have seen a plethora of EP releases-- most serving as polished demo tapes and short introductions to new artists in a finicky, short attention span, McBlog listener climate-- that have proved to be the perfect way for new artists to break their material to new ears. And the trend continues with Lexington, Kentucky MC, Nemo Achida, and his new album, The North Star EP.

A tick over twenty minutes is all it takes for Nemo to release his dreams into your ear canal (pause). The blunted-in-space production, courtesy of Nemo and Clutch, cradle Nemo's conscious transmissions perfectly, allowing Nemo to paint the night with bright balls of gassed up rhymes.

South Netherlands producer Bluntspeakers and MC Unknowneye join forces on a four track EP that they are giving away as a gift-- The Gift. Many of my American compadres might be worried about the accent or the vocals being in another language, but fear not-- Uknowneye rocks the mic in english and turns out to be a perfect match for Bluntspeakers' banging beats.

Kileen's own Crew54 is back with another episode of their web reality show.
This two part monster showcases footage from the legendary Questlove driving the crowd crazy, while also spotlighting two MC's on the move.  First there is Muggzy Flows who has connections to Word Association & The Wright Brothers, but it was the release of his solo album and he put on a lyrical show on a warm Saturday afternoon.  Then in the second part we shine some light on Kydd, who has making moves locally while on the path to bigger and better things.
Hit the flip side for Part 2 of the Reality Show and a short inside look on a Slap Rapz session with CientifiQ.

Civil Writes- Room to Breathe

Portland, Oregon hasn't appeared on the music radar much since "Louie Louie" and Nu Shooz, but the home of "the other white meat" is looking to make a comeback! Besides The Sandpeople, Lifesavas, Cool Nutz, and my personal favorite Othello, P-town has up and coming MC Diezel P and his group Civil Writes; a sub-group of a future live band that will be called Speaker Minds.

Civil Writes recently let loose a nine track digital album to give fans a glimpse into their future as a live band and I found one track that needed to be shared before you check out the rest on their bandcamp page.

Once you are done with that, you can feast your eyes and ears on another one of my favorite things to ever come out of Portland-- U-Krew's "If You Were Mine." Your day has just been made.

Luv Jonez- The Beat Tape 2010 + Some Sounds Are Pleasant, But These Shits is Bangin'

I finally found some downtime to do one of my favorite things online-- browsing beat tapes. Today, I came across two dope tapes from Madison, Wisconsin producer Luv Jonez. Both releases show Jonez' great range, potential, and taste in samples, while proving that this up and coming beatsmith is ready to hand tailor a wardrobe of sounds for an MC to "wear out."

Below are a few samples from each tape, as well as the full downloads.

Eligh- GreyCrow Album Trailer

Living Legends MC Eligh is preparing the release of his first solo album since Poltergeist in 2003. GreyCrow, an emotionally charged album that tells Eligh's tumultuous tale of addiction, growth, and inner struggle, will cover the dark and light side of the MCs journey over the past few years.
Five years ago, Eligh was wandering the streets of downtown Los Angeles searching for his next fix. After abusing drugs recreationally, he eventually dove deeper into a deadly addiction to heroin, threatening not only his life, but also his love for music. Turning down tours and worried for his own health and well being, he admitted himself into rehabilitation. With five years of clean living, Eligh hopes that his story of hope can help others through their troubles, whether it is a drug addiction, loss of a family member or losing yourself.
Eligh, who refers to himself as, “The Crow” states that this album is a representation of his growth and acquisition of wisdom from the struggles he endured within the past seven years. Those same struggles also morphed him into a more mature, GreyCrow. Eligh splashes the album with bright rays of hope, which are coalesced with dark drops into a rumbling low end, which grant the album a perfect mixture of dark and light elements. Eligh handles the production on fifteen of the seventeen-tracks on the album; longtime Living Legends affiliate, Elusive and UK dubstep producer, Starkey on two tracks, provide other production. Eligh also extends his wings and brings notable guest features from Brother Ali, The Grouch, Aesop Rock, Luckyiam, Zumbi of Zion I, Scarub, Marty James, Pigeon John and many more.
The GreyCrow lands November 9, 2010.

Free Album: Wildabeast- Beastroc

We haven't heard a lot of music from Notherground book ends Wildabeast and Jelani in awhile, but it looks like the two microphone beasts are ready to come out of hibernation and gnaw on some beats-- and I'm all for that! Both artists were in the studio last night cookin' up some new material and are already prepared to share their creations.

Beastroc is not only a an album, but a skills experimentation. The duo wrote, recorded, and mixed the album in its entirety in only eight hours, while using the instrumentals from the popular Black Keys-meets-hip hop project, Blackroc.

Wildabeast is the featured MC on the EP and methodically mouths his trials and tribulations through the bohemian mist created by Dan Auerbach and company. Slow, calm, and steady best describes The Hood Hippy's delivery, and it's this style of production that does nothing but carry his cadence to the next level. The dreary Portishead project was a nice fit, but it seems that a haze of distorted guitars and keys are what really soothes the savage beast.

Jelani has engineered yet another gem (he is also the man behind Black EL's Color Commentary) and it's good to see him back from behind the books and rippin' raspy raps inside the control room again.

Free Mixtape: Mattic- Live from the Attic

Every avid music collector has a few 'ghost classics' floating in their stacks. Ghost classics are those hidden gems that are relatively unknown to the majority; the little indies that could, but never had the steam; the albums that are found on the internet three years after they were dropped and dubbed classics by rap nerds that love to label things as classic or underrated; and the things people never see or hear until one night it just jumps out and gives you a jolt. One of my favorite ghost classics is the 2004 debut album from Charlotte, North Carolina's The Others entitled Past Futuristic.

I came across the record sometime in 2006 and it became one of my favorite sleeper releases to mention and share with fellow hip hop heads on message boards and at pre-show kickbacks. Despite always receiving positive feedback from everyone that heard it, MCs Madwreck and Mattic, alongside DJ/Producer DR, never got their well deserved props, and to this very day, continue to get the cold shoulder, despite solid efforts like Madwreck's 2008 solo The Last Detail; the 2009 self titled ZKPRZ project (Mattic and Madwreck's side project without producer Catt Magle); and Mattic's Poltergeist Music: A Collection of B-Sides and Rarities that was released earlier this year. Show the motherfuckers some love, will you?

Here's your chance.

Mattic has just released another free mixtape via his Bandcamp page called Live from the Attic, featuring brand new cuts produced by Madwreck and DR. Staying true to his style that made me a instant fan of The Others, Mattic murders twelve tracks of that feel good and lets loose lyrical loogies on unoriginal rappers, sexy evil minded women, gimmick loving US rap fans, and more.

Peep some samples from the tape below, as well as the download to the full mixtape and his other 2010 release, Poltergeist Music.

Chicago MC and URB Next 100 alumni Thaione Davis first caught my attention with his 2009 debut album, Still Hear, which was produced entirely by another one of my favorite Chi-Town talents, Rashid Hadee. Thaione's seamless flow, poetic prowess, and pristine ear for production has molded him into one of independent hip hop's most underrated prospects.

I've made it a point to keep in touch with Thaione and his team as he continues to make moves and was given this fresh new track called "Survival of the Times" to start of the weekend. Thaione rips a Tall Black Guy laced track with fresh rhymes about a subject every human being can relate to-- surviving this crazy thing called life.

Promo Video: JR & PH7- The Update

In 2009 there was an LP that got the frozen shoulder from fans, bloggers, and journalists alike, but I never understood why. German production duo JR & PH7's "The Standard" instantly raised the standards attached with creating a memorable hip hop compilation record. On top of the vivid artwork, refreshing production, and tasteful song sequencing, the no namers from Deutschland brought 20 very different hip hop artists together and somehow kept a cohesive synergy and sound throughout its 17-track body. A feat many veteran producers fail to hit on their own compilation projects.

Coming at you in November via Soulspazm Records is the highly anticipated follow up to that release, The Update, featuring an all-star cast of MCs: Evidence, Sean Price, Elzhi, Oddisee, Edo G, Torae, Shawn Jackson, and more.

MP3 Download: UNKLE- The Runaway ft. Lupe Fiasco

I'm a sucker for these types of collaborations. Usually, you'd never see Lupe's name on this site.
Rcrdlbl says: Narcotic-laden synths, bone-splintering bass, and purgatory-leaning refrains do their best to command Lupe Fiasco in this spanking new take on “The Runaway,” but dude’s verse stays as effortless as ever. Chalk it up to the UNKLE touch—what other electro-psych outfit could produce a hip-hop collabo as undeniably intense and eerily calm? Tomorrow brings the release of their latest, The Answer EP (and the digital return of original member Tim Goldsworthy), while a handful of much-anticipated tour dates can be found here.

Free Album: Sam Wilkes- Booth

After coming across the Los Angeles hip hop group Warm Brew, I was directed to a free EP from a nineteen year old Los Angeles based producer that carries a blues infused, electronic hip hop sound that I can't get enough of.

Sam Wilkes started constructing beats at the tender age of fifteen and was called upon by various Bay Area artists for his production talents, but after years of catering to others' needs, Sam decided to embark on his own journey and began to develop the trippy, electro laced, bluesy hip hop he is known for today.

Wilkes gained a lot of attention last year for his Wilkish Mixtape-- a hipster's wet dream full of hyperactive laser show soundtracks ("Marsha Burns"), nerd raps ("Brody Time" ft. Bro T), and southern swagger tributes ("Mr. Big Shot" and "A Very Hendo Experience" ft. Hendo)-- but it's his 2010 release, Booth, that really shows off his arsenal of talents.

Within its small four track frame, Sam Wilkes utilizes his blues and soul background to build beautiful backdrops such as the Black Keys-esque "Let Him Go," bass buzzed"Willing to Ride," and funky piano riddled "Little Does She Know." Short, sweet, and lethal-- Booth is without a doubt Sam Wilkes' shot heard around the world.

Free Instrumental Album: Raedawn & Main- 2/8

Two unknown Hungarian producers by the name of Raedawn and Main have joined forces to bring us an excellent eight track instrumental album that carries a Nujabes influenced vibe throughout. Despite a few green spots-- spotty transitions, stock bass lines, and the atrocity that is track six-- the duo show a lot of potential on what many would consider a modern day demo tape.

Below are two of my favorite tracks from 2/8, as well as the link to the free download.

Free Album: Random- Heroes, Volume 1

If you are an internet music junkie, chances are you know of Philadelphia born rapper, Random (aka Mega Ran). The video game connoisseur/Rapper/Producer/Teacher has been making a lot of noise in the blogosphere ever since the release of his popular 2007 MegaMan inspired album, Mega Ran. His humble attitude and nonchalant approach to his rhyming allows his messages and flow to swirl through your senses like smoke from Mega Man's arm cannon. Finally, second hand smoke that's actually good for you.

Earlier this year, Random received even more acclaim when he connected with Panacea producer K-Murdock on their video game inspired album, Forever Famicom. The nostalgic roller coaster ride through 8 bit yesterdays and the technologies of today got hip hop gamers to press pause on both their controllers and iPods and contribute to an online fund that would allow Random and K-Murdock to turn Forever Famicom into a DVD movie and vinyl version of the album. The overwhelming response from fans-- the $2,500.00 goal was reached in 5 days and the pot now bubbles over at $3,000.00 with 20 days left in the campaign-- has been so inspiring that Random felt he needed to give something back.

Heroes, Volume 1 features ten tracks that sample some of Random's favorite musicians of all time: Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, The Jacksons and spotlights a rising artist really coming into his own. If you haven't peeped Random before, now is the time.

You can support Random & K-Murdock's DVD/Vinyl project here. Album download and samples below.

Free MP3: AUTOmatic- The Natural + Once Again

Two rogue hip hop mutants from the Milwaukee based vigilante collective, House of Mutants, have combined powers to mold a dynamic new record in hopes to heal the rotting ears of planet Earth. MC A.P.R.I.M.E. and producer Trellmatic, better known as AUTOmatic, aim to protect and serve hip hop listeners by following the House of Mutants creed, which is to: protect & preserve an artform/culture that seemingly fears what is different & original...Instead of "sticking to the script" by today's musical standards, the goal of the House of Mutants is to make GREAT music while remaining creative & uncompromising to the expired trends, styles, & sounds that continue to plague Hip-Hop today.

After listening to AUTOmatic's debut album, Transistor, it's safe to say that Dr. Wacktagon and his evil swagged out henchmen don't stand a chance.

Instead of x-ray vision or the ability to read minds, Trellmatic and A.P.R.I.M.E. rely on their musical mutant muscle to defeat foes. Trellmatic's ability to hypnotize listeners with his ambrosial atmospheres mixed with A.P.R.I.M.E.'s arsenal of witty word weaponry make the duo almost impossible to stop and improbable to stop listening to.

There will always be evil looming in Industry City; another crime to solve, vengeance to be had. But what's most important-- after the bloated clouds of fight dust disappear into the moon and the bodily wreckage gets removed by street sweepers following an epic sound battle-- is that us fans still have heroes at the end of the day. The ones that fight the good fight, keep the balance of power, and keep what we love real.

Here is a double dose of real. You can cop the entire thing now on CdBaby (released August 28th) and show support to your new heroes.

Free MP3: The BURNERZ (Zumbi & The ARE)- Eloheem

The Burnerz are a new duo consisting of Zumbi of the hip-hop group Zion I and the Houston-based Trackmasters producer, The Are. Now, after a year of scratching out rhymes, making beats, mixing, and mastering, The Burnerz—who met on tour in Europe in 2003—just completed one of the most energizing independent hip-hop albums of the year.
The Burnerz recruited The Grouch, OneBeLo, Martin Luther, and C-Holiday for the album. “Instead of going through layers of editing (like we do for Zion I),” explains Zumbi of his approach, “We tried to capture the raw emotion of both lyrics and beats for this album.”
As the charismatic emcee of Bay Area group Zion I, Zumbi has released six critically acclaimed albums along with numerous EPs and mixtapes. Zumbi contributed to the Grammy-Award winning group Linkin Park’s album Reanimation as well as the BassNectar album, and mixtapes for the Roots, K’naan and Q-Tip. Currently, Zion I are touring with reggae sensations Rebelution. Their seventh album Atomic Clock drops Nov 9.
Fans will have to wait until October 12 to hear The Burnerz, but they promise to leak new singles (not on the record) every week until then.

Mix: Sixteen Beans: A Tribute to Edo G

Whiskeyteeth artwork >>>.

Overworked and overlooked-- welcome to Boston, Massachusetts hip hop.

Edo G has been killin' it on wax since 1991. Since his celebrated debut, Life of a Kid in the Ghetto, with Da Bulldogs, Edo has released four LPs, two EPs, and three collaboration albums to critical acclaim.

I feel Edo never gets the props he deserves compared to other MCs from that era and area. So, for all those that continue to sleep, have never heard, or hate on Edo G-- Sixteen Beans is yours to feast on.

I had to omit a few of my favorite cuts because the sound quality was awful, but hopefully you'll enjoy these select Edo tracks as much as I do. Stream & Download below. It’s meant to be streamed, though…

Free MP3: Qwel & Maker- El Camino

After a quick couple months in the studio, Qwel & Maker are set to release their 3rd full-length album titled Owl (Galapagos4, 2010). Once an 'occasional collaboration', Qwel & Maker's creative partnership has developed into a full-fledged endeavor and the results are loud, clear, and undeniable.

“The Owl watches and grows wiser,” explains Maker. “As we became more aware of our environment, we gained new perspectives. This album is our way of reconnecting with everything that surrounds us.”

The duo is most at home on tracks like “El Camino” where Qwel’s lyrics scrape vibrant, and often harsh, realities across Maker’s soundscape of hard hitting drums and deft arrangements. “Name looking strange in the limelight / Chamber what you trying to change / Sitting here soaking in hindsight / It’s the road / Its the life I chose” concludes Qwel. Newly committed to the ‘life they chose’ and resolved to defeat stagnation in an industry in transition, Qwel & Maker have only just begun…

Look out for Owl on September 14th.

Hip Hop duo Crew 54 are currently working on an exciting throwback project with fellow Kileen, Texas resident CientifiQ. The short and rugged EP will be called Slap Rapz and will feature MOS and G-Christ going in over CientifiQ's hard knocking production, as well as CientifiQ adding his own rap vocals to the mix a la Pete Rock.

More 411 to come. Stay tuned.
