Cambatta- Oxymoron (Prod. Jon Phonics) [Video]

We just posted a Jon Phonics instrumental album below, now you can see and hear how his foundations sound wrapped around some hard hitting hip hop vocals from up North.

Cambatta is a talented MC hailing from New Haven, CT and has returned to the hip hop scene with a vengeance with his new single and video for “Oxymoron”. The music video was filmed in Connecticut and was directed by DJ Nice. The track was produced by UK producer Jon Phonics; a regular name on the Louis Den Beat Battles scene.

Don't know about you guys, but after this track Cambatta has my full attention!

Jon Phonics- Jonathan's Beats & Pieces [Free Instrumental Album Download]

London, England based producer Jon Phonics recently released a free 28-track instrumental album showcasing beats he constructed over the last two months called, Jonathan's Beats & Pieces. The album turned out to be a dope inside look on what this talented beatsmith has to offer, especially considering it takes a year or two for other producers to whip up a beat tape like this.

You can expect spaced out foundations, dirty electronic stabs, trippy samples, blunted bass lines, and yet another solid beat showcase from an overseas up and comer. Don't sleep.

Retrospek- SomeShytWeDid EP [Free EP Download]

I don’t know if there is a better gift than music for the holidays (ok, there isn’t). So, in that case, we bring you a free EP that Boston, MA trio, Retrospek, dropped last night on Christmas Eve.

The SomeShytWeDid EP ‘s nonchalant title matches the laid back, blunted backdrops that JuneLyfe, A. Spendacash and Rah Intelligence provide on their latest 6-track freebie. Mixing placid production with soulful crooning and slick spittin’, Retrospek percolates endless potential. Below is the link to their free debut EP, as well as a few sample tracks to get you interested in the full download.

Sahtyre- Sahta Clause [Free EP Download]

I've been working hard trying to get the Swim Team onto more established blogs, but you un-originals refuse to pay attention. After yet another STRONG year from the Los Angeles collective, it's about time the leaders of this putrid form of new wave music journalism give these talented MCs their proper shine.

Putting the soapbox and blogitics aside, Sahtyre, in my opinion, had one of the best Swim Team solo records come out this year with his debut, High Saht. After listening to "Liquefied Dopeness" and "Pure Inspiration" from that very album, I knew that Saht was an MC to watch out for and keep track of.

Today, in the spirit of Christmas, Sahtyre has put on Santa's hat and has released one of the few dope hip hop Christmas tributes to come out this year, free of charge. Be sure to leave out some weed cookies for him before you download. It's the right thing to do.

Children of the Night- Where the Wild Things Are Mixtape

I've been following the New York based trio known as Children of the Night since the release of their first mix tape last year. Versa, Remy Banks, and Lansky continue to vibe together seamlessly, despite messing with a rougher sound. I got to admit, I do miss their blunted jazz vibe. I think that's their bread and butter, but peep this and let COTN know what you think on Twitter.

Here is their latest free mix tape, Where the Wild Things Are, as well as a sample track from the tape to give you a taste of what you are about to get into.

Late Bloomers- Talkin' Talkin'

The Late Bloomers are a Southern California hip hop trio consisting of Azel (MC/Producer), Non-Stop (MC), and Giant Squid (DJ/Producer). After becoming amigos in college, the trio eventually began building on their group's sound and purpose, while spending their free time behind microphones and production equipment.

Since forming in the early stages of 2009, the hardworking mic musketeers have already released two free albums, Trifecta and Growth Series 1, which can be found linked on their myspace page. Their third and upcoming release, Growth Series 2 EP, is set to drop the first week of the new year and will feature this smooth and jazzy cut I have featured below.

Intuition- Don't Try

As some of you may know, today was to be the day that I released a free downloadable mixtape exclusively through Kevin Nottingham and 2dopeboyz. After getting the masters of my album back and listening to the two side by side, I’ve decided to go a different route and begin promoting album leaks (to be released as scheduled on Jan 26th) and plan on releasing the mixtape as a “best of retrospective” of sorts AFTER the album comes out. To those of you that are familiar with my work this shouldn’t be much of a letdown as most of the material has been released on other projects. To those of you unfamiliar with my work who decide to check out the album, the mixtape will work better in that context as a means to hear some of my back catalog. Thank you to KN and 2DBZ for being supportive of the decision.
Onto the new leak. I love what I have been hearing from Intuition's upcoming album, Girls Like Me, set to blast off in the first quarter of 2010.

Fuzz and Mac- Rescue You

Who said oil and water never tastes good together?

Augusta, Georgia bred MC Fuzz Jaxxon has once again merged muses with Seattle, Washington Trip Hop/Jazz vocalist McClain Sullivan to bring us one of the most refreshing collaboration releases of 2009, Fuzz & Mac's "Remember This."

The duo originally met while offering their talents to the former jazz fused hip hop band, Organix, earlier in the decade. After years apart, chasing their own artistic dreams in separate parts of the country, fate reared its magical hand and re-connected the perfect pair in the same town they met: Wilmington, North Carolina. Their artistic re-connection brought us 2008's "Together Again"; a funky, soulful EP that spotlighted the duo's organic chemistry.

Recently, Fuzz and Mac completed their sophomore release, Remember This, which is available (I think) online, but I can find a valid buy link for. Below are two tracks from the album, as well as 1 track (In the Evening) from their older album.

Got Next: Outasight

Hailing from the concrete slabbed hills spread throughout the Eastern bank of the Hudson River, Outasight is an emcee/vocalist putting a fresh new twist on a Yonkers sound that was once blessed by the lips of a now bronzed Ella Fitz and put to rest at night by Jada’s kiss.

Born Richard Andrew, Outasight is a cool, calm, and collected individual that carries himself with a slight, casual lean like the brick buildings wrapped around Shonnard Terrace. In video interviews, he stands complaisant and poised behind a pair of signature black Ray-Bans, equipped with a slight stoned grin that shows satisfaction with his propulsive young career. Always seen dressed to the nines, his fashion feel mirrors his music in the sense that it’s perpetually polished, perfectly ironed, and has never been worn by any other master of ceremonies.

Originality could be the perfect middle name to bridge the gap between the two first names on his birth certificate. Like no one before, Outasight has united soulful-pop croons with breezeless boasts about big city dreams, life, love, and music appreciation. Every album he has released since his 2007 debut ‘Employee of the Year’ has shown immeasurable sonic growth. 2008’s ‘Radio New York was the dusty, yet refined full length record that catapulted his name onto numerous New York City marquees and endless internet posts. An album that showed his innate ability to fuse infectious hooks, melodies, and head rocking raps over jazzy gems from Dante Lewis and D/Will, as well as foreshadowed Outasight’s pop-hop hits to come.

One of 2009’s best mix tapes was the Mick Boogie commissioned, ‘From There to Here: An Album Prequel’, which served as our first glimpse at the bubbling chemistry between him and up and coming producer, 6th Sense; a musical marriage that has already birthed epic compositions such as, ‘Brand New Day‘ & “When I Heard the Beat Knock,” and has elevated O’s abilities to another level.

“6th is a great producer.” Outasight told me in a recent e-mail, “What he has really helped with is making the musical landscapes behind what I do so much bigger, broader, and universal. He’s a great musician and together we are influenced by so many different types of music…the chemistry comes natural.” These comments ring loud and true on his latest free LP,Further’, where amongst the guitar plucks, frantic horn stabs, and thundering drums, 6th and Outasight’s serendipitous connection shines brightest.

His new release Further remains an aptly titled LP, as the simple adverb explains exactly where Outasight has taken his music. While grabbing influences from a myriad of genres like: 70’s blues-rock, folk, modern pop, soul, and golden era hip hop, O has proven to new artists that the standard template for constructing a hip hop song has forever changed, the bar has been raised and standards refreshed. Growth and maturity is also accomplished on the free LP, as he toys with various styles, themes, and vocal cadences. He additionally displays surprising versatility as a musician with pristine production choices and contagious song construction.

In only a few short years, we have seen a young musician take his career further than most emcees experience in a lifetime of beats and rhymes. Outasight continues to expand hip hop horizons and expose new slivers of dawn to a genre that has been stuck in the eves of midnight for many years. Soon enough, you might want to borrow the black Ray Ban’s from O’s nose, because there is no doubt that with the release of his upcoming major label debut, ‘From Here to Eternity’, hip hop will be seeing a brand new day.

Intuition- Lonely

Brand new leak from Intuition's upcoming mix tape, Girls Are Gonna Like Me, AND solo album, Girls Like Me. A sophomore solo record that will no doubt make Intuition a bloghold name within the independent hip hop community.
Today I'm leaking one of my favorite songs from the upcoming mixtape "Girls Are Gonna Like Me" (it's on the album too, just wanted to throw a couple new tracks on the mixtape). It's called "Lonely" and by the title you would think it's an emo song, but it is pretty much the exact opposite. It's a clever ode to the booty call over a really soulful beat produced by Equalibrum.

DJ Center- Leave the City Outside ft. Oddisee

You know I'm going to post some new Oddisee as soon as I get my hands on it.

Here is a new single off of DJ Center's upcoming album, Everything In Time, set to hit shelves February 9th, 2010.
As the songs unfold on “Everything in Time,” it becomes clear that the record is a journey across multiple genres, woven by lush piano chords, warm bass lines, boom-bap drum patterns, flying tambourines and soaring horns. The underlying essence is timeless music. Each track sounds different but is housed under the same soulful roof- DJ Center.

Here is a stunning new video from the production duo of DJ /rupture  and Matt Shadetek, which was directed and animated by Sara Taigher with illustrations by Maria Chiara Di Giorgio. The video is a medley featuring DJ /rupture and Matt Shadetek’s “Underwater High Rise,” Nico Muhly’s “Mothertongue Pt. 1,” and Mizz Beats’ “Blue Night.”

Portformat- Knock Knock ft. Bless1

To infinity and beyond! Is a hokey quote that best describes the solar soundscapes seething throughout German producer Portformat's latest record, The Repeat Factor, which is available now via various online retailers (Tokyo Dawn Records).

You could also say that NASA-compatible Hip Hop Funkadelica is what to expect on Portformat’s debut album as well. The Repeat Factor is a surprising debut effort that orbits around space themes of the 70s and golden moments of 90s R’n'B. Guest appearances from various quirky neo-soul sirens like Georgia Ann Muldrow, Shuanise, and Suzi Analogue shine brighter than the obscure hip hop vocals from relatively no name MCs such as Obey the Altar Native, Joe Kickass, Thesaurus Rex, and more, but Portformat's pristine planetary production will keep your attention nevertheless.

Below are two of my favorite tracks from the album. One track features vocals from an MC I wish I could hear more from in Chicago MC, Bless1, and the second track highlights a talented songstress in the United Kingdom's very own rising talent, Shuanise.

Here are two more leaks off of Intuition's upcoming mixtape, Girls Are Gonna Like Me. The first track is a collaboration with fellow Los Angeles MCs, Dumbfoundead and NoCanDo, over Lupe Fiasco's Paris/Tokyo beat. The second track, a verse over bouncy tune from Cas One's upcoming solo album.

Metazon & Kev Brown- The Man (+4 remixes)

This is a must download for The Incubator's remix alone (which I singled out below). HEAT!
What happens when one of the most critically acclaimed underground hip hop producers/mc joins forces with the only Canadian band that plays live Hip Hop, Jazz and Funk Fusion? The result is “The Man”, a response to the call for authenticity, sought after by many across the world, in the realms of an art form that is all too often exploited, misused and left for dead.

In the perspective of setting the record straight, Metazon and Kev Brown unite and through an exercise in style, they bring it back to its roots and clearly demonstrate why we should follow their lead, and the reason they are “the man for the job…” when the time comes to regain the prestige for the True School Hip Hop and to give back the place that it deserves.

Fresh Espresso- The Lazerbeams + Big or Small

I can already predict what everyone will say when they get a hold of this record-- hipster ghetto-tech punks need to put a sag in their skinny jeans-- but that gimmick is old and doesn't even apply to this Seattle, WA based duo consisting of two extremely talented Michigan natives in producer P-Smoov and MC Rik Rude.

Their debut record, Glamour, features 14-tracks glazed with surreal spaced out samples, bugged out bass driven beats, and party plastered poetics that will immediately put Fresh Espresso in your "groups to watch out for now and in the future" folder.

P-Smoov and Rik Rude have seem to master what groups like The Knux failed miserably at, which is modernizing party hip hop and making it friendly to a wide variety of music fans while remaining genuine. What the Knux and and many other pseudo-hipster groups lack in authenticity, Fresh Espresso make up for with their keen ability to produce believable, infectious party tunes that never lack substance.

Below are two sample tunes from their come-out-of-nowhere record that should be on everyone's weekend playlist. Glamour is available now via CDBaby and other online retailers.

Fresh Breath Committee- Right Direction + Day's Gone

The eight headed monster known as the Fresh Breath Committee is made up of Colorado hip hoppers, Flawless, Kontrast, Purpose, Fo Chief, Catch Lungs, Crystal, Hi-Res and DJ Skip Ripkin. Forming like Voltron after meeting at various hip hop shows around the state, the Rocky Mountain mojo began brewing and spilled into their 2009 creation and debut album, CPR; a refreshing, versatile hip hop record full of conscious conundrums, soulful singing, and pure hip hop ethos that independent fans crave.

The Colorado collective captures a sound that I can best describe as Doomtree on Prozac and Adderall. Similar to the popular Minnesota group  in numbers, but with a more upbeat and focused message.

Below are two of my favorite tracks from their debut record, CPR, which is now available on CDBaby.

Bored Stiff- Now More Than Ever Free EP Download

Not many know about the 12 member Northern Californian collective known as Bored Stiff and I have no idea why.

Formed in 1992 within the Fillmore, lower Haight Street section of San Francisco, Equipto, White Mic, Mint Rocky, P-Way, Julz, Liel, Priz, Ike, and Jo Jo continue to brew blunted blasts for the Bay Area and the rest of the West Coast.

Recently, the group decided to revive the record label that started it all for them in the early nineties, Solidarity Records, a label used as a platform to release Bored Stiff albums and any affiliated solo projects.

The first release on the newly rebirthed label is the brand new 8-track EP, Now More Than Ever, which is available for a FREE download via their bandcamp website. The EP captures Bored Stiff's classic laid back sound within the first four tracks and finishes strong in the second half with four perfect bay area underground archetypes.

Below, I've provided the re-direct to their free EP, as well as two of my favorite songs from the EP that might entice an instant commitment to the download.

MC Paul Barman- Props + Back On a White Horse

Paul Barman is unapologetically weird...and I like that.

His new record, Thought Balloon Mushroom Cloud, was released to the world while most of us were gnawing on turkey and testosterone via television this past Thanksgiving. Featuring collaborations with ?uestlove, Michel Gondry, DOOM, Prince Paul, Masta Ace, and Del the Funky Homosapien, Barman continues to belittle other rapper's vocabulary in his modest, playful way, all while maintaining his weird and bouncy flow that made him quite the internet novelty for backpackers around the web.

Below are two tracks that I felt needed some shine off his new record. I felt the production outshined Barman's oddball orations, which is highlighted in these two tracks, but you can be the judge. Thought Balloon Mushroom Cloud is now available on Paul's website via digital download.

NoCanDo- Is A Virus Free EP Download

It's cats like NoCanDo that make any Blowedian booster want to make 43rd and Leimert their home away from home.

Representing the contemporary sector of the legendary West Coast collective, NoCanDo has been earning his stripes over the past half decade by winning various battles (including Scribble Jam 2007), tearing down stages across California, and making sure his music is fed to the famished fans that circle like vultures around freebie hubs on the internet.

Admittingly, I was not a fan when I first came across the SoCal MC, but as he continues to grow so does my ear for his wit, passion, and creativity; all which shine brightly on his latest free EP, ...Is A Virus.

Be on the look out for his full length solo LP early in 2010.

LMNO- Too Strong ft. Kev Brown

Equipped with a mathematical flow that you'll either love or hate, veteran Los Angeles MC, LMNO (Leave My Name Out) returns to wax with his recent collaboration album, Devilish Dandruff with Holy Shampoo, featuring production from French producer, Yann Kesz. The 12-track record, which was put on shelves November 17th, features Kev Brown, Lorett Fleur, and JFK (Grayskul).

While the former Visionaries mainstay stays consistent, it's the lackluster presence of the unknown sound provider that leaves the listener scratching their head as if they needed a squeeze of Head & Shoulders. Yann Kesz drags LMNO into the dirt and soils the vocals so much that no divine Shampoo left in the world could purify the grime.

Despite the lethargic production, there are a claw full of tracks worth your ear. Peep the provisions below, as well as the video for "Never Stop." You can purchase the album via iTunes now.

Symmetry & Ryan Lewis- Down

Other than Shawn Jackson and the upcoming PHIMB project, I had no clue what the state of Rhode Island had to offer the world of hip hop; however, my knowledge of North Eastern rap grew even more after I came across a collaborative record from "Ocean State" MC, Symmetry, and a renowned Emerald City producer, Ryan Lewis.

The self titled album, which was recently released on iTunes, features an electric cauldron bubbling to the brim with bangin' production and infectious tributes to various musical eras spanning from the roaring 30s and 60s/70s rock to the alternative revolution of the early 90s. For most hip hop elitists, the pop-drizzled hooks and sing song bits won't find their way into the backpack, but for those craving something more progressive and fun-- this is for you.

Below, I added not necessarily the best song on the album, but the most accessible to all hip hop preferences, and one that gives the best glimpse of what the record is all about in "Down." I also wanted to show off some older material from Symmetry that I found and enjoyed-- his "Intoxication" video and a track from his 2007 release on Poorly Drawn People Records, Dusty Pickup, called "Idiosyncratic." I think I dig his singing more than his rapping, but you decide...

Mellow Orange- Cool Style ft. Raashan Ahmad

I haven't quite figured out what or who is behind Mellow Orange (there is absolutely no safe information to report from their myspace/facebook pages, etc.), but I do know that they teamed up with Freddie Joachim's Organology imprint to release the Getaway EP earlier this year. This past week, this unknown collection of music afficianados, who appreciate 'the real' value of music according to their website, are back with a brand new EP full of mellow grooves and dusty jazz featuring Raashan Ahmad, Othello, Braille, Freddie Joachim, and more.

I decided to toss up my favorite single that I felt represented the real that some of us can still appreciate. If you are one of those people, make sure to cop the EP, which is now available on iTunes & CDBaby.

Strange Fruit Project- Sepia Tone (Prod. S1)

I was real amped to see one of my favorite groups from my home state of Texas return to the limelight. S1, Myth, and Myone are the Strange Fruit Project; a Waco, Texas hip hop trio dedicated to organic hip hop laced with live instrumentation and feel good lyricism. While they are mostly known for their breakout 2006 record, The Healing, which featured Little Brother, Erykah Badu, Bavu Blakes and production from Illmind, Jake One, 9th Wonder, and Vitamin D, SFP obviously has some fuel left in their tank judging by the heat that came from their new free EP, M.A.S.K. (Making Art Sound Cool); a gracious freebie serving as a pre-party to their upcoming LP due out in 2010.

While other websites have already posted this on Tuesday, I wanted to give shine to my favorite track off the EP, Sepia Tone. No need to ask me why I love S1 after hearing this track. Enjoy!

The Grouch- Whatever I Say

I don't know if you all know yet, but DJ Fresh is dope as fuck. I'm so hyped that The Grouch got him on board for a full record. Here is the first leak from the aforementioned, Three Eyes Off the Time, as well as a trailer for the record above.

The Grouch- Three Eyes Off the Time New Album News

Those that know the man behind the Buffalo mask already understand who my favorite MC is-- The Grouch. Even though he has grown apart from his darker/introspective material that made me a huge fan, The Grouch continues to burst through the billowy boundaries set by the new generation of artists and to expand the creative lines of hip hop. Here is what he had to say about his new record, Three Eyes Off the Time, which is set to release on December 9th.

On December 8, 2009 I will be releasing my new project entitled, "Three Eyes Off The Time" . This project is me acknowledging what is going on in the world around me, and even though I utilize all the web tools available to me, I refuse to participate at the levels of  foolishness that have become the norm. I think that it's time that people relaize just how powerful we really are.

In today's maniacally fast paced, and highly interconnected world filled with 140 character updates, constant availabilty, and staggering voyeurism it is so easy to become overwhelmed with it all. This winter, I'm urging you to join me as I unplug and reconnect with the physical and spiritual world. I brought along my DJ, DJ Fresh , who is handling the production on the project, be on the look-out for a leaked single soon. Track listing is below.

Sareem Poems- Rude Awakening Remix ft. Ken Starr & Oddisee

After a critically acclaimed original release, Long Beach native Sareem Poems is releasing an unusually comprehensive Deluxe Edition of his album Black & Read All Over. The Deluxe Edition will include all fourteen of the original songs along with instrumentals for each track. The album's most unique feature, however, might be its remixes. Sareem chose to remix the album's centerpiece track, "Lower the Boom" not once or twice, but half a dozen times. Each remixed version of "Lower the Boom" was given a different name, and each features a different producer and new guest verses.

"Rude Awakening" is the first of the "Boom" remixes, and features typically fantastic contributions from DMV super-producer and Diamond District emcee Oddisee, as well as lyrical contributions from up-and-coming rapper DMV rapper Kenn Starr.

The Whitefield Bros. (formerly known as The Poets Of Rhythm) are a funk/soul/afro-beat group out of Germany that is re-connecting with Stones Throw Records to release their new album, Earthology, their long-awaited follow up to 2001’s In The Raw.

The track features two of my favorite Boston MCs, Edan and Mr. Lif, ripping up the bouncing tuba with their infectious and original flows.

Kayo- Inner City Bootleg Vol. 1 Free Album Download

I'm sure all of you purists, backpackers, and boom bap fanatics already know that Europe and Japan are now the hip hop hot spots for Golden Era revival music and production. With a deep admiration for jazz and snap-bap drums, beatsmiths from overseas still embody the nostalgic sound that everyone remembers and cherishes.

Kayo, a relatively unknow French producer, has just released a free remix album that features the type of production I was talking about above. Putting his own spin on tracks from J-Live, Talib Kweli, Kev Brown, Jurassic 5, amongst others; Kayo adds a fresh, yet classic, twist on various hip hop tracks we have loved and bumped before.

1. Kayo - inner city blues part 1
2. Funkdoobiest - hip hop music
3. Wade Waters feat Az - speak on it
4. Blendcrafters feat Mf Doom - melody
5. J-live - brand nu
6. Blake9 and Count Bass D - gamble
7. Talib Kweli feat Dion - more and less
8. Krumb Snatcha - closer to god
9. Kayo - inner city blues part 2
10. The Game feat kanye west - wouldnt get far
11. Boom Bap Project feat Blackalicious - wyle out
12. Kev Brown - work in progress
13. Jurassic 5 - turn it out
14. Talib Kweli - listen
15. Kev Brown - say sumthin
16. Kayo - inner city blues part 3
17. Akrobatik - livinin the city

New track from one of independent hip hop's most fun MCs that we barely ever hear from, MC Paul Barman, featuring an exciting vocal triple scoop from the likes of Masta Ace, Del the Funky Homosapien, and C-Rayz Walz. This track is off of Barman's upcoming solo record, Thought Balloon Mushroom Cloud, which will be released on November 24th. UGSmag with the assist.

Blockhead- Attack the Doctor + Which One of Your Jerks Drank My Arnold Palmer

Known for his slow build ups, crisp transitions, and cinematic beats, Blockhead is truly one of independent hip hop's most overlooked producers. From his scattered work with Aesop Rock (Appleseed (1999)-  None Shall Pass (2007)) to his two highly touted solo instrumental records, Music by Cavelight and Downtown Science, Blockhead has consistently dropped original hip hop compositions since his unveiling alongside Definitive Jux's outlandish orator.

Last week, like his three instrumental solo albums before, Blockhead released his new production record via Ninja Tune Records entitled, The Music Scene. Unlike Uncle Tony's Coloring Book, his solo album released in 2007, The Music Scene goes back to the Blockhead we all know and love-- methodical, brooding beats anchored with surprising transitions that will bring smiles to avid music fans faces.

Below are two tracks from the new album, which is available via digital download now and will be released in physical CD & vinyl form early in 2010.

Is it just me, or does Blame One get better with age?

Blame is back and good news! He isn't barkin' from his chair at the retirement home. Instead, Blame One has let loose two new tracks from his upcoming mixtape, Leaks and Gemz, which will be available to the public in a couple of months. Also, as reported by PHIMB, Blame is teaming up with DJ Babu of the Beat Junkies to drop a collaborative LP some time in 2010.
