Beat Maker Beat (aka Space Kid)- Izichu ft. Shawn Jackson & The Need ft. Versis

After the release of his experimental instrumental project MacroKosmos, Russian born beatsmith Beat Maker Beat (aka Space Kid) teamed up with Digi Crates to release Def Joints, a ten track album featuring Space Kid's more 'rappable' production with scattered rhymes from some of California's finest in Shawn Jackson, Rasco, Phil Da Agony, Krondon, and Versis. Combining synth smoked neo-soul, haunting electro boom bap, and bluntquests through Dilla's studio in the sky, Space Kid is an artist that should be on everyone's radar and end of the year producer lists.

Here are two cuts from the Def Joints record that is now available on iTunes.

Free Mix Tape: Shawn Jackson- Hollywood Shuffle Side B

Veteran MC Shawn Jackson has been on my radar since he released the "Feelin' Jack" single off his slept on 2008 release, First of All. Earlier this summer, he followed that record up with Brand New Old Me, a solid record released on Tres Records, and has since been sprinkling unreleased tracks throughout the blogosphere with his Hollywood Shuffle mix tape series with DJ Lowkey

I missed Side A back in May (peep below for the download link), but here is the recently released Side B featuring production from Exile, Dibia$e, Mainframe (of Johnson & Jonson) and DJ House Shoes, as well as vocals from 6th Sense, Donwill, Tunji, and more. Full download and track list below.

Free Album: The Beast & Nnenna Freelon- Freedom Suite

Okayplayer unveiled their new Jazz site the other day, The Revivalist, and this free jazzy hip hop gem was released for free in celebration.

Echoing the style of Guru’s Jazzmatazz, jazz vocalist and multi Grammy nominee Nnenna Freelon join hip-hop quartet The Beast to release Freedom Suite, a 10-track collection of creative reflections on jazz and hip-hop hosted by 9th Wonder.
Drawing from a traditional jazz canon as well as hip-hop “standards” from the recent past, the album brings a live jazz sound to some of the most loved tracks in popular music.  The album features six original songs written and produced by The Beast and also re-makings of modern classics such as Mos Def’s “Umi Says,” Johnny Mercer & Hoagey Carmichael’s “Skylark,” and Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop.”  The project has guest appearances from Branford Marsalis, Phonte (of The Foreign Exhchange/Little Brother), YahZarah andGeechi Suede (of Camp Lo).
Recognizing the importance of talking about the convergence of jazz and hip-hop and its role in forward-thinking culture, the album also features conversations among some of hip-hop and jazz’s greatest intellectual minds including ?uestlove, Herbie Hancock, Amiri Baraka, Branford Marsalis, Angela Davisand more.

Free Beat Tape: SirOJ- Vibeout: Beats 2004-2007

Dutch beatsmith SirOJ has just released a compilation beat tape to celebrate the release of his Castlevania 7". Vibeout: Beats 2004-2007 features the many styles of SirOJ-- synth riddled electro, downtempo, jazzy-- and will give newcomers to OJ or Slumgillion's (OJ's production group) infectious sounds. The only downside to this beat tape is that some of the beats are low quality and the volume levels don't match. As long as it knocks, right? And it does.

Video: Souls of Mischief- Won One

After a ten-year hiatus the mighty Souls of Mischief formed like Voltron, releasing the Prince Paul produced Montezuma's Revenge last December to high praise and rave reviews. Nearly a year later, and following world tours and the release of their own Heiro Man toy, Souls is releasing a new video for "Won One." In the Don Tyler produced video, the west coast rhymers go black and white, spitting sharp and precise verses throughout several city settings, an impressive feat considering the video was shot in one take. As the video jumps back and forth from one side of the Golden Gate Bridge to the other, the rappers find themselves imposed on the side of luxury high-rises and abandoned apartment buildings, alike, with their images, like the group's music itself, transcending the city they call home.

Muneshine & Bix- Status Symbol (The Remixes)

Full album download and my favorite track below.
Status Symbol, Muneshine’s anticipated follow-up to his critically acclaimed debut LP Opportunity Knocks, showed no signs of the evil sophomore jinx.Muneshine’s witty and observant lyricism combined with world class production by M-Phazes, !llmind, Oddisee (and more) proved that Muneshine had the skills to eclipse his rookie outing; not an easy feat when your debut boasts production by DJ Spinna and the legendary Pete Rock. A controversial Playgirl centerfold exposed the MC to an entirely new demographic most rappers rarely reach. The well-endowed wordsmith and his groundbreaking pose with a komodo dragon launched his flexibility into the dreams of housewives around the world and Status Symbol to #7 on the Billboard Charts (Gospel). Alongside a 10/10 rating, Black Hair Magazine compared listening to the album to “having a nasty-ass orgasm with Nia Long,” and, “The bible. If the bible was a compact disc.”
Three weeks after Status Symbol’s release, Muneshine made headlines by refusing to accept the Grammy for Spoken Word Album of the Year because the award presentation wasn’t televised. Shocked by the backlash of the music community and the death of his komodo dragon, Muneshine halted all future promotion of Status Symbol and relocated to Tahiti. On his move to Tahiti, Muneshine told Ikea Catalogue, “I love Tahiti Treat. I get thirsty a lot. It makes sense.”
Almost a decade later, in 2010, Canadian super-producer Bix (Ghettosocks, Alpha Flight, Team Wolf) discovered the original accappella sessions from Status Symbol while going through Interscope founder Jimmy Iovine’s collection of vintage Dat Tapes. Risking probation violation, Bix slipped the cassettes into his hip-satchel and headed straight to D&D Studios to put his own twist on Muneshine’s masterpiece. Seven Tahiti Treats and 48 hours later, Bix’s remixed version of Status Symbol was complete.
Tahiti’s lack of electricity forced Muneshine to return home to Toronto to hear the reworking of his classic LP. Creative differences over the album’s title stalled its release. While Bix wanted to name the LP ‘Muneshine:Status Symbol:reBIXed’, Muneshine wanted to name it ‘anything but that!’ The three month battle ended when both artists discovered that a journalist from Auto Trader leaked the album onto Napster. Anger disappeared when the album reached 7 million downloads in its first 24 hours online. The demand was evident.

RoQ’y TyRaiD- Woosah

I'm becoming less and less of a fan of Twitter, but I still get introduced to dope music through my network's feed, so I'll cope. RoQ’y TyRaiD is a Phoenix, Arizona based MC that released his free album The New Millennium Man earlier this summer which featured RoQ'y terrorizing beats from Madlib, Jake One, Just Blaze and original production from The Baron Boys, Dn3, and Rie$go. The three tracks below are my personal favorites from his free Bandcamp download. Take a listen and let me know if you agree that this dude shits on most of the new rappers getting global blog coverage today. What's new, right?

Rufio- The Edgewater + Rufio- On & On ft. Chuuwee + The Cove Lounge ft. Haz Solo

While visiting his fellow sound manipulator Haz Solo in Madison, Wisconsin, Sacramento producer Rufio was challenged to make a beat tape during his week long stay at The Edgewater Hotel. The end result is a fourteen track odyssey through showers of distorted synths, blunted abstractions, and streams of seminal sampling featuring a stockpile of talent from Sacramento (KENO, MjH, Illecism, Chuuwee, and C Plus) and Haz Solo himself.

You can peep two samples from the $free99 release below, as well as the full download link. Make sure to check out http://areyouu.tumblr.com and http://hazsoloagain.wordpress.com for more updates and free music.

cap D- Respect + King of the Mountain ft. Brother Ali (Prod. Illmind)

Below are the two singles from cap D's new album PolyMath available in stores now! I provided the download for Respect but just the stream for King of the Mountain featuring Brother Ali. Both tracks are produced by Illmind, who has two more tracks on the record.
cap D is a modern day Renaissance Man. From his early years putting the hip-hop group All Natural on the map as one of Chicago’s most-respected underground hip-hop groups, to building the brand for All Natural, Inc. into one of the world’s most-respected independent hip-hop labels, to serving as associate editor at Third World Press publishing, to embarking on his solo rap career while lecturing at preeminent universities, to involving himself as an activist in the on-the-ground work done by community organizers, to his professional life as an attorney representing sports teams such as the Chicago Bulls, Chicago White Sox and Oakland A’s…cap has pretty much done it all. And he has done it well.
While pursuing his life’s many passions, cap D has rocked for thousands of fans worldwide at festivals from Hultsfred, Sweden to Porto Alegre, Brazil, each time delivering his signature style, energy and poignant lyrics. His solo albums Writer’s Block, Insomnia and Return of the Renegade, along with his work as the MC of All Natural on No Additives, No Preservatives, Second Nature, Vintage and Elements (Fire), reveal a prolific master of hip-hop lyrics and production who continues to get better with time.
On his new album PolyMath (available on All Natural, Inc.) cap D pulls all of the pieces together and delivers the full spectrum of banging beats, strong lyrics, battle rhymes, concepts, aggressive anthems and laid-back, introspective songs. With production duties handled by No I.D., !LLMiND and cap D, and stand-out cameo verses provided by Brother Ali and Tragedy Khadafi, PolyMath is the surprise hip-hop album of 2010.

Cap D- PolyMath: The Mixtape + Cap D- Money

Capital D, one half of the celebrated underground hip hop group All Natural, has just released his fourth solo album PolyMath on his own All Natural, Inc. imprint today. The record features production from No I.D. and Illmind and and guest features from Brother Ali and Tragedy Khadafi.

Cap released this free PolyMath Mixtape a week or so ago featuring previously unreleased material and Cap going in over some industry beats. A perfect prelude to the album that seemingly came out of nowhere. If you wait a few minutes, I'll have a that Brother Ali single from the album for you above this post. Until then-- feast on the mixtape and my favorite track from the tape.

Free Album: Crew54 & CientifiQ- Slap Rapz

Crew54, the Central Texas based rap duo made up of MCs Mos and G-Christ, are back with another free download full of soulful boom bap bangers from Killeen, TX beatsmith CientifiQ. Crew 54 have really been coming into their own lately and there latest album shows another vast improvement from their earlier material. There last release, The 54 Reality Show Tape, showed the two MCs hitting their stride with infectious cuts like "Moving Around" and "Soulbounce", and that chemistry continues to bubble behind CientifiQ's beats.

My favorite track "Da Sypha" and the full free album download is available below. *Slap*

Katrah-Quey- Fifty5 Nine Remix ft. Planet Asia & Prolifical + Sights Targeted at Infatuation

Earlier this year, New Orleans beatsmith Katrah-Quey released his Daybreak, Retrace JPN record on the Japanese Libyus Music imprint featuring Tha Connection, Big Pooh, Preach Jacobs, Planet Asia, and more. After listening to his beautiful multi-layered instrumentals that were heavily drenched in a storm of dreamy keys and frantic jazz drum kits, I was immediately sold that this newcomer could become one of my favorite jazzy producers getting shine in the Land of the Rising Sun. Little did I know that Katrah is no newcomer and has been releasing a plethora of records on various labels and under different monikers since 2005. Known best in some circles for his unprecedented outbursts of high quality work, it's no wonder that Katrah was influenced by the over achieving genius of laboholics like Madlib, Nujabes, Ge-Ology, Kan Kick, and more.

With an MF Doom-esque catalog of material to dig for and sift through, I'll just leave you with what I currently have from the new record. Daybreak, Retrace JPN and his latest EP project with MC Preach Jacobs, Rebel Radio, are available on iTunes/Amazon here and here. I also added an old Juggaknots remix he did for "New Money" off of the Use Your Confusion album.

Ghost Ghost- Camden, Maine & BandSoup.com Presents: Bandabaisse Vol. 1 Compilation

On top of spotlighting independent hip hop's rising talent on WhiskeyTeeth, I also help out another independent music website that deals with all types of genres. Recently, BandSoup put together their first compilation album to showcase twelve of the most popular bands that uploaded their material to their site. Most of the compilation floats in the mellow end of the acoustic folk and alternative rock pool, so if you dig that type of music you might find something you like. Check out the free download below, as well as two samples from the compilation.

Also, BandSoup's blog is looking for more hip hop talent to be featured on their site and an upcoming hip hop compilation album. So if you are an artist or producer, take a minute to upload a track or two to the site.

Free Album: Quincy Vidal- Cookin' in Brooklyn

MC/Vocalist Le'Asha Julius and MC Caleb Eberhardt met on a star somewhere between San Francisco and Washington DC. Soon after, their serendipitous musical connection blossomed into an idea, a name, and eventually an exciting debut album that will soon become a hit throughout the true school blogosphere.

Quincy Vidal's Cookin' in Brooklyn slithers slowly through a thick urban bohemian mist and feeds on eclectic bodies of nostalgia. Its 11-track body is full of warmth, whimsy, and weirdness as Caleb's playful poetics dart and weave through Le'Asha's soothing vocals. It's tight and compact frame allow their essence to easily sink in, but don't be fooled-- this duo has many musical layers that will need multiple digestions.

I can already foresee a slew of Arrested Development/Digable comparisons fired in their direction, but I won't go there. All I know is something is cookin' in Brooklyn...and it smells damn good.

FreshNerd- The David Bowie Beat Tape

FreshNerd has been killing his series off themed beat tapes so far. He has flipped and mangled classic cuts from Whitney Houston, Cyndi Lauper, Billy Ocean, New Edition, and most recently David Bowie, turning 80's favorites into new millennium madness.

The David Bowie Beat Tape is interesting to say the least. FreshNerd decided to tackle Bowie's 1983 record, Let's Dance, and adds a whole lot of flavor to this early 80's classic. NoseSpray and C.B.J. go hard-- what do you think?

Free Album: Cloudy October- The Aviator is Dead EP

Armed with an alluring flow that unveils haphazardly like stop motion animation, Portland, Oregon rookie MC Cloudy October demands your full attention from the first bar uttered and beyond. The alternate take of "inlaw", the opening track of his debut album The Aviator is Dead EP, proves my bold claim as Cloudy's tongue pirouettes around a patchwork beat dripping with eerie bass, spooky string scales, and various piano loops. Much like "inlaw", his oddball poetics and infectious delivery on "Lowerface" is also sure to grab underground hip hop fan's attention, as he bounces up and down through a foggy landscape of dark drums and tribal smoked sounds.

Underground hip hop has changed a lot over the past few years: Instead of angst fueled technical raps over abstract production, we have glittery, emotionally charged rhymes over electro-tickled laptop experiments; instead of apocalyptic poetry, we have love letters turned into rap lyrics; instead of Definitive Jux, some would say we have definitive junk. I'm open eared to the new indie hip hop vibe, but it is kind of refreshing to hear that old subterranean sound rise back to the surface.

Cloudy October embodies it and bodies it, so enjoy the EP and the two tracks below on your cloudy October day.

Free Mixtape: Aleon Craft- The Stargazing Soundtrack

Late pass.

After looking through some SteadyB posts, I came across a Mick Boogie and Terry Urban hosted project that I somehow missed from earlier this year from Decatur, Georgia MC, Aleon Craft. The Stargazing Soundtrack is a perfect dosage of spaced out southern rap featuring nicely executed neoteric atmospheres from the SMKA production crew and memorable guest vocals from Nappy Roots, Hollyweerd, Mikkey Halsted, Bobby Creekwater, Playboy Tre, Young Scolla, Jarren Benton, Gripplyaz, Tom P and C# Sharp.

Check it out if you haven't already. It's a little better than his Backwudz material (which isn't bad either).

Free Album: Langston Bukowski (RacecaR & Apoc)- Down & Out in Chicago and Los Angeles

A few months ago I was singing the praises of Chicago MC RacecaR; an incredibly slept on talent that some might know as 1/2 of Modill alongside producer K-Kruz. Since his Debilorithmicos feature, I made it a point to keep in contact with him and all his musical endeavors, a connection that quickly paid off when this dope record hit my inbox-- RacecaR and Apoc's (better known as Langston Bukowski) collaboration album, Down & Out in Chicago and Los Angeles.

Featuring production from Earmint, Rel, and K-Kruz, RacecaR and Apoc trade vicious verses over a riot of electro spiked foundations. This is quite a different sound environment for RacecaR, who usually has his feet propped up on K-Kruz' dusty jazz clouds, but the dude was blessed with one of those Black Thought flows that sounds good over any type of sample or instrument.

Peep two of my favorite tracks from the free album below and continue to get yourself affiliated with Modill & RacecaR by downloading it in full and checking the other tracks I tossed up. If you like what you hear, the full PHYSICAL version of the album (along with the 320 kbps digital version) is available to purchase for the gracious and meager price of 5 bones. Cough it up!

Sidenote: Apoc didn't get much love in this post, but it's only because he's about to get his own ode above in a few minutes. Stay tuned.

More info from Apoc on the album + the old "Langston Bukowski" video from The Ritz featuring RacecaR on the flip side.

Racecar and I have known each other for quite some time now. Over the years, we’ve performed together, toured together and recorded a number of songs together. One of these songs, Langston Bukowski, appeared on The Ritz album The Night of Day in 2008. It spoke to the dichotomy between an urge for social change, and a tendency towards an almost nihilistic abuse of alcohol and other substances that we both felt was present in our lyrics. The song garnered such a positive response from fans, that we eventually made a video for it and began work on an entire album together as Langston Bukowski. This album is the result of those efforts. As reflected in the title, the songs were written and recorded in between tours in the cities of Chicago and Los Angeles, the respective homes of Racecar and I during those years. We recruited a handful of our friends to help us with the project including producers Earmint, Rel of The Ritz and Racecar’s partner in Modill, K-Kruz, who also recorded, mixed and mastered the album. We all hope you have as much fun listening to these songs as we had making them.
