Cambatta- Oxymoron (Prod. Jon Phonics) [Video]

We just posted a Jon Phonics instrumental album below, now you can see and hear how his foundations sound wrapped around some hard hitting hip hop vocals from up North.

Cambatta is a talented MC hailing from New Haven, CT and has returned to the hip hop scene with a vengeance with his new single and video for “Oxymoron”. The music video was filmed in Connecticut and was directed by DJ Nice. The track was produced by UK producer Jon Phonics; a regular name on the Louis Den Beat Battles scene.

Don't know about you guys, but after this track Cambatta has my full attention!

Jon Phonics- Jonathan's Beats & Pieces [Free Instrumental Album Download]

London, England based producer Jon Phonics recently released a free 28-track instrumental album showcasing beats he constructed over the last two months called, Jonathan's Beats & Pieces. The album turned out to be a dope inside look on what this talented beatsmith has to offer, especially considering it takes a year or two for other producers to whip up a beat tape like this.

You can expect spaced out foundations, dirty electronic stabs, trippy samples, blunted bass lines, and yet another solid beat showcase from an overseas up and comer. Don't sleep.

Retrospek- SomeShytWeDid EP [Free EP Download]

I don’t know if there is a better gift than music for the holidays (ok, there isn’t). So, in that case, we bring you a free EP that Boston, MA trio, Retrospek, dropped last night on Christmas Eve.

The SomeShytWeDid EP ‘s nonchalant title matches the laid back, blunted backdrops that JuneLyfe, A. Spendacash and Rah Intelligence provide on their latest 6-track freebie. Mixing placid production with soulful crooning and slick spittin’, Retrospek percolates endless potential. Below is the link to their free debut EP, as well as a few sample tracks to get you interested in the full download.

Sahtyre- Sahta Clause [Free EP Download]

I've been working hard trying to get the Swim Team onto more established blogs, but you un-originals refuse to pay attention. After yet another STRONG year from the Los Angeles collective, it's about time the leaders of this putrid form of new wave music journalism give these talented MCs their proper shine.

Putting the soapbox and blogitics aside, Sahtyre, in my opinion, had one of the best Swim Team solo records come out this year with his debut, High Saht. After listening to "Liquefied Dopeness" and "Pure Inspiration" from that very album, I knew that Saht was an MC to watch out for and keep track of.

Today, in the spirit of Christmas, Sahtyre has put on Santa's hat and has released one of the few dope hip hop Christmas tributes to come out this year, free of charge. Be sure to leave out some weed cookies for him before you download. It's the right thing to do.

Children of the Night- Where the Wild Things Are Mixtape

I've been following the New York based trio known as Children of the Night since the release of their first mix tape last year. Versa, Remy Banks, and Lansky continue to vibe together seamlessly, despite messing with a rougher sound. I got to admit, I do miss their blunted jazz vibe. I think that's their bread and butter, but peep this and let COTN know what you think on Twitter.

Here is their latest free mix tape, Where the Wild Things Are, as well as a sample track from the tape to give you a taste of what you are about to get into.

Late Bloomers- Talkin' Talkin'

The Late Bloomers are a Southern California hip hop trio consisting of Azel (MC/Producer), Non-Stop (MC), and Giant Squid (DJ/Producer). After becoming amigos in college, the trio eventually began building on their group's sound and purpose, while spending their free time behind microphones and production equipment.

Since forming in the early stages of 2009, the hardworking mic musketeers have already released two free albums, Trifecta and Growth Series 1, which can be found linked on their myspace page. Their third and upcoming release, Growth Series 2 EP, is set to drop the first week of the new year and will feature this smooth and jazzy cut I have featured below.

Intuition- Don't Try

As some of you may know, today was to be the day that I released a free downloadable mixtape exclusively through Kevin Nottingham and 2dopeboyz. After getting the masters of my album back and listening to the two side by side, I’ve decided to go a different route and begin promoting album leaks (to be released as scheduled on Jan 26th) and plan on releasing the mixtape as a “best of retrospective” of sorts AFTER the album comes out. To those of you that are familiar with my work this shouldn’t be much of a letdown as most of the material has been released on other projects. To those of you unfamiliar with my work who decide to check out the album, the mixtape will work better in that context as a means to hear some of my back catalog. Thank you to KN and 2DBZ for being supportive of the decision.
Onto the new leak. I love what I have been hearing from Intuition's upcoming album, Girls Like Me, set to blast off in the first quarter of 2010.

Fuzz and Mac- Rescue You

Who said oil and water never tastes good together?

Augusta, Georgia bred MC Fuzz Jaxxon has once again merged muses with Seattle, Washington Trip Hop/Jazz vocalist McClain Sullivan to bring us one of the most refreshing collaboration releases of 2009, Fuzz & Mac's "Remember This."

The duo originally met while offering their talents to the former jazz fused hip hop band, Organix, earlier in the decade. After years apart, chasing their own artistic dreams in separate parts of the country, fate reared its magical hand and re-connected the perfect pair in the same town they met: Wilmington, North Carolina. Their artistic re-connection brought us 2008's "Together Again"; a funky, soulful EP that spotlighted the duo's organic chemistry.

Recently, Fuzz and Mac completed their sophomore release, Remember This, which is available (I think) online, but I can find a valid buy link for. Below are two tracks from the album, as well as 1 track (In the Evening) from their older album.

Recently, Blame One fired off some freebies via his twitter account (like he usually does, so pay attention to his tweets kids!) and haterplayer liberated them on a blog post. Blame and Exile should never stop working together and that's a fact.

Got Next: Outasight

Hailing from the concrete slabbed hills spread throughout the Eastern bank of the Hudson River, Outasight is an emcee/vocalist putting a fresh new twist on a Yonkers sound that was once blessed by the lips of a now bronzed Ella Fitz and put to rest at night by Jada’s kiss.

Born Richard Andrew, Outasight is a cool, calm, and collected individual that carries himself with a slight, casual lean like the brick buildings wrapped around Shonnard Terrace. In video interviews, he stands complaisant and poised behind a pair of signature black Ray-Bans, equipped with a slight stoned grin that shows satisfaction with his propulsive young career. Always seen dressed to the nines, his fashion feel mirrors his music in the sense that it’s perpetually polished, perfectly ironed, and has never been worn by any other master of ceremonies.

Originality could be the perfect middle name to bridge the gap between the two first names on his birth certificate. Like no one before, Outasight has united soulful-pop croons with breezeless boasts about big city dreams, life, love, and music appreciation. Every album he has released since his 2007 debut ‘Employee of the Year’ has shown immeasurable sonic growth. 2008’s ‘Radio New York was the dusty, yet refined full length record that catapulted his name onto numerous New York City marquees and endless internet posts. An album that showed his innate ability to fuse infectious hooks, melodies, and head rocking raps over jazzy gems from Dante Lewis and D/Will, as well as foreshadowed Outasight’s pop-hop hits to come.

One of 2009’s best mix tapes was the Mick Boogie commissioned, ‘From There to Here: An Album Prequel’, which served as our first glimpse at the bubbling chemistry between him and up and coming producer, 6th Sense; a musical marriage that has already birthed epic compositions such as, ‘Brand New Day‘ & “When I Heard the Beat Knock,” and has elevated O’s abilities to another level.

“6th is a great producer.” Outasight told me in a recent e-mail, “What he has really helped with is making the musical landscapes behind what I do so much bigger, broader, and universal. He’s a great musician and together we are influenced by so many different types of music…the chemistry comes natural.” These comments ring loud and true on his latest free LP,Further’, where amongst the guitar plucks, frantic horn stabs, and thundering drums, 6th and Outasight’s serendipitous connection shines brightest.

His new release Further remains an aptly titled LP, as the simple adverb explains exactly where Outasight has taken his music. While grabbing influences from a myriad of genres like: 70’s blues-rock, folk, modern pop, soul, and golden era hip hop, O has proven to new artists that the standard template for constructing a hip hop song has forever changed, the bar has been raised and standards refreshed. Growth and maturity is also accomplished on the free LP, as he toys with various styles, themes, and vocal cadences. He additionally displays surprising versatility as a musician with pristine production choices and contagious song construction.

In only a few short years, we have seen a young musician take his career further than most emcees experience in a lifetime of beats and rhymes. Outasight continues to expand hip hop horizons and expose new slivers of dawn to a genre that has been stuck in the eves of midnight for many years. Soon enough, you might want to borrow the black Ray Ban’s from O’s nose, because there is no doubt that with the release of his upcoming major label debut, ‘From Here to Eternity’, hip hop will be seeing a brand new day.

Intuition- Lonely

Brand new leak from Intuition's upcoming mix tape, Girls Are Gonna Like Me, AND solo album, Girls Like Me. A sophomore solo record that will no doubt make Intuition a bloghold name within the independent hip hop community.
Today I'm leaking one of my favorite songs from the upcoming mixtape "Girls Are Gonna Like Me" (it's on the album too, just wanted to throw a couple new tracks on the mixtape). It's called "Lonely" and by the title you would think it's an emo song, but it is pretty much the exact opposite. It's a clever ode to the booty call over a really soulful beat produced by Equalibrum.

DJ Center- Leave the City Outside ft. Oddisee

You know I'm going to post some new Oddisee as soon as I get my hands on it.

Here is a new single off of DJ Center's upcoming album, Everything In Time, set to hit shelves February 9th, 2010.
As the songs unfold on “Everything in Time,” it becomes clear that the record is a journey across multiple genres, woven by lush piano chords, warm bass lines, boom-bap drum patterns, flying tambourines and soaring horns. The underlying essence is timeless music. Each track sounds different but is housed under the same soulful roof- DJ Center.

DJ Rupture & Matt Shadetek- Solar Life Raft Medley Video

Here is a stunning new video from the production duo of DJ /rupture  and Matt Shadetek, which was directed and animated by Sara Taigher with illustrations by Maria Chiara Di Giorgio. The video is a medley featuring DJ /rupture and Matt Shadetek’s “Underwater High Rise,” Nico Muhly’s “Mothertongue Pt. 1,” and Mizz Beats’ “Blue Night.”

Portformat- Knock Knock ft. Bless1

To infinity and beyond! Is a hokey quote that best describes the solar soundscapes seething throughout German producer Portformat's latest record, The Repeat Factor, which is available now via various online retailers (Tokyo Dawn Records).

You could also say that NASA-compatible Hip Hop Funkadelica is what to expect on Portformat’s debut album as well. The Repeat Factor is a surprising debut effort that orbits around space themes of the 70s and golden moments of 90s R’n'B. Guest appearances from various quirky neo-soul sirens like Georgia Ann Muldrow, Shuanise, and Suzi Analogue shine brighter than the obscure hip hop vocals from relatively no name MCs such as Obey the Altar Native, Joe Kickass, Thesaurus Rex, and more, but Portformat's pristine planetary production will keep your attention nevertheless.

Below are two of my favorite tracks from the album. One track features vocals from an MC I wish I could hear more from in Chicago MC, Bless1, and the second track highlights a talented songstress in the United Kingdom's very own rising talent, Shuanise.

Big news for the extremely talented Yonkers MC, Outasight, as he signs with Asylum/Warner Music. Outa has without a doubt been my favorite new talent over the past two years and continues to raise the bar with every release and single leak. Congratulations.

Here are two more leaks off of Intuition's upcoming mixtape, Girls Are Gonna Like Me. The first track is a collaboration with fellow Los Angeles MCs, Dumbfoundead and NoCanDo, over Lupe Fiasco's Paris/Tokyo beat. The second track, a verse over bouncy tune from Cas One's upcoming solo album.

Metazon & Kev Brown- The Man (+4 remixes)

This is a must download for The Incubator's remix alone (which I singled out below). HEAT!
What happens when one of the most critically acclaimed underground hip hop producers/mc joins forces with the only Canadian band that plays live Hip Hop, Jazz and Funk Fusion? The result is “The Man”, a response to the call for authenticity, sought after by many across the world, in the realms of an art form that is all too often exploited, misused and left for dead.

In the perspective of setting the record straight, Metazon and Kev Brown unite and through an exercise in style, they bring it back to its roots and clearly demonstrate why we should follow their lead, and the reason they are “the man for the job…” when the time comes to regain the prestige for the True School Hip Hop and to give back the place that it deserves.

Fresh Espresso- The Lazerbeams + Big or Small

I can already predict what everyone will say when they get a hold of this record-- hipster ghetto-tech punks need to put a sag in their skinny jeans-- but that gimmick is old and doesn't even apply to this Seattle, WA based duo consisting of two extremely talented Michigan natives in producer P-Smoov and MC Rik Rude.

Their debut record, Glamour, features 14-tracks glazed with surreal spaced out samples, bugged out bass driven beats, and party plastered poetics that will immediately put Fresh Espresso in your "groups to watch out for now and in the future" folder.

P-Smoov and Rik Rude have seem to master what groups like The Knux failed miserably at, which is modernizing party hip hop and making it friendly to a wide variety of music fans while remaining genuine. What the Knux and and many other pseudo-hipster groups lack in authenticity, Fresh Espresso make up for with their keen ability to produce believable, infectious party tunes that never lack substance.

Below are two sample tunes from their come-out-of-nowhere record that should be on everyone's weekend playlist. Glamour is available now via CDBaby and other online retailers.

Fresh Breath Committee- Right Direction + Day's Gone

The eight headed monster known as the Fresh Breath Committee is made up of Colorado hip hoppers, Flawless, Kontrast, Purpose, Fo Chief, Catch Lungs, Crystal, Hi-Res and DJ Skip Ripkin. Forming like Voltron after meeting at various hip hop shows around the state, the Rocky Mountain mojo began brewing and spilled into their 2009 creation and debut album, CPR; a refreshing, versatile hip hop record full of conscious conundrums, soulful singing, and pure hip hop ethos that independent fans crave.

The Colorado collective captures a sound that I can best describe as Doomtree on Prozac and Adderall. Similar to the popular Minnesota group  in numbers, but with a more upbeat and focused message.

Below are two of my favorite tracks from their debut record, CPR, which is now available on CDBaby.
