New Jersey MCs, Almighty and DistantStarr (MAGr), might not have popped on your radar last year, but I still truly believe they had one of the best free album releases of 2009 with their RocktheDub hosted freebie, No News is Good News, featuring Blu, Cymarshall Law, and Fel Sweetenberg.
Today, the underrated Philadelphia propagated producer, Small Professor, laced the web with his rendition of the lead single from the record, Laminated Looseleafs, featuring everyone’s favorite new godlee rapper, Blu.
Has this turned into a straight up Los Angeles hip hop blog in the last few days or what? Maybe I need to move back.
Here is another leak from Intuition's upcoming sophomore LP, Girls Like Me, which is set to release on January 26th. The lovely guest vocals are from a diamond in the rough jazz singer from LA that will soon see her day in the sun, Raquel Rodriguez, which you might know from a Dom Kennedy song or two.
Despite being on the opposite end of the coast, I still hear shit trickle down my LA grapevine, which led me to this infectious new cut from Nocando from his upcoming solo record, Jimmy the Lock, featuring an oddball beat from DJ Nobody and cuts from the notorious Gaslamp Killer.
Semi-new free instrumental record from Auckland, New Zealand producer, Haz. The title of the album explains the atmospheres. Makes my gig a lot easier.
1. Ghetto Morning 2. Joy 3. Counting Candles (For Kath) 4. Hot Wind 5. Castles In The Sand 6. Rainbow Hush 7. You Tell Interlude 8. Extasy Moves 9. Euphoria Sunset 10. The Outro – Just Us
Dumbfoundead seems to be GRIN-DING hard this new year. Here is yet another free download from rising Swim Team MC featuring vocals from another Los Angeles lyricist, Wax. If you've ever been to LA, you'll know exactly what these two are talking about.
PHIMB took care of the exclusive earlier, so here is a re-up of what they said about Blame's Mixtape earlier today:
A few months ago the homie Blame One announced his retirement from hip-hop. But today we get word that Blame is back, and stronger than ever. Today I am honored to exclusively present to you, Leaks & Gemz, a mixtape featuring some new joints and unreleased goodness. On this tape you are going to come across appearances from cats like Blu, Fashawn, Exile, Supa Koopa 805, Trek Life, Sene, DJ Babu, Mr. Brady and many more. Along with the release of this mixtape, I would also like to bring to your attention that Blame is in the studio with DJ Babu, crafting a classic collaboration LP. As we wait for that, check out the countless bangers on this mixtape, and stay tuned for more news on this hip-hop veteran.

The wave of Swim Team goodness continues with a new collaboration track from Thirsty Fish MC, Dumbfoundead, and unknown Maryland crooner, Sam Ock. The two Asian sensations blaze their respective parts over a breezy beat from Ock himself and pay tribute to a true tale that Dumb experienced.
Stay tuned for more music from Swim Team members throughout 2010. I'm making a point to stay 100% on top of it this year.
Clandestine is when something is "carried out in a secretive manner..." and even though these tracks weren't meant to be released under a cloak, they found their way within the shadows of your iPods. Here are some of my favorite "secret" gems from 2009, blended together for your enjoyment. The streaming mix has 3 more bonus tracks that couldn't fit on the zipped version. Happy New Year and here's to a year of hip hop that I know will be even better than 2009.
We just posted a Jon Phonics instrumental album below, now you can see and hear how his foundations sound wrapped around some hard hitting hip hop vocals from up North.
Cambatta is a talented MC hailing from New Haven, CT and has returned to the hip hop scene with a vengeance with his new single and video for “Oxymoron”. The music video was filmed in Connecticut and was directed by DJ Nice. The track was produced by UK producer Jon Phonics; a regular name on the Louis Den Beat Battles scene.
Don't know about you guys, but after this track Cambatta has my full attention!
London, England based producer Jon Phonics recently released a free 28-track instrumental album showcasing beats he constructed over the last two months called, Jonathan's Beats & Pieces. The album turned out to be a dope inside look on what this talented beatsmith has to offer, especially considering it takes a year or two for other producers to whip up a beat tape like this.
You can expect spaced out foundations, dirty electronic stabs, trippy samples, blunted bass lines, and yet another solid beat showcase from an overseas up and comer. Don't sleep.
I don’t know if there is a better gift than music for the holidays (ok, there isn’t). So, in that case, we bring you a free EP that Boston, MA trio, Retrospek, dropped last night on Christmas Eve.
The SomeShytWeDid EP ‘s nonchalant title matches the laid back, blunted backdrops that JuneLyfe, A. Spendacash and Rah Intelligence provide on their latest 6-track freebie. Mixing placid production with soulful crooning and slick spittin’, Retrospek percolates endless potential. Below is the link to their free debut EP, as well as a few sample tracks to get you interested in the full download.
I've been working hard trying to get the Swim Team onto more established blogs, but you un-originals refuse to pay attention. After yet another STRONG year from the Los Angeles collective, it's about time the leaders of this putrid form of new wave music journalism give these talented MCs their proper shine.
Putting the soapbox and blogitics aside, Sahtyre, in my opinion, had one of the best Swim Team solo records come out this year with his debut, High Saht. After listening to "Liquefied Dopeness" and "Pure Inspiration" from that very album, I knew that Saht was an MC to watch out for and keep track of.
Today, in the spirit of Christmas, Sahtyre has put on Santa's hat and has released one of the few dope hip hop Christmas tributes to come out this year, free of charge. Be sure to leave out some weed cookies for him before you download. It's the right thing to do.
I've been following the New York based trio known as Children of the Night since the release of their first mix tape last year. Versa, Remy Banks, and Lansky continue to vibe together seamlessly, despite messing with a rougher sound. I got to admit, I do miss their blunted jazz vibe. I think that's their bread and butter, but peep this and let COTN know what you think on Twitter.
Here is their latest free mix tape, Where the Wild Things Are, as well as a sample track from the tape to give you a taste of what you are about to get into.
The Late Bloomers are a Southern California hip hop trio consisting of Azel (MC/Producer), Non-Stop (MC), and Giant Squid (DJ/Producer). After becoming amigos in college, the trio eventually began building on their group's sound and purpose, while spending their free time behind microphones and production equipment.
Since forming in the early stages of 2009, the hardworking mic musketeers have already released two free albums, Trifecta and Growth Series 1, which can be found linked on their myspace page. Their third and upcoming release, Growth Series 2 EP, is set to drop the first week of the new year and will feature this smooth and jazzy cut I have featured below.
As some of you may know, today was to be the day that I released a free downloadable mixtape exclusively through Kevin Nottingham and 2dopeboyz. After getting the masters of my album back and listening to the two side by side, I’ve decided to go a different route and begin promoting album leaks (to be released as scheduled on Jan 26th) and plan on releasing the mixtape as a “best of retrospective” of sorts AFTER the album comes out. To those of you that are familiar with my work this shouldn’t be much of a letdown as most of the material has been released on other projects. To those of you unfamiliar with my work who decide to check out the album, the mixtape will work better in that context as a means to hear some of my back catalog. Thank you to KN and 2DBZ for being supportive of the decision.
Onto the new leak. I love what I have been hearing from Intuition's upcoming album, Girls Like Me, set to blast off in the first quarter of 2010.
