2 Black Milk Video Interviews

A little late on these, but I always enjoy watching video interviews with my favorite artists. The video up above is with Pound Magazine. Pound talks to Black about the equipment he got his start on, his pursuit of his music dreams while working dead end jobs, and snatching drums from Dilla.

The interview on the flip side is with OKPlayer where Milk discusses Dilla's influence, Detroit, and directs his live band for the cameras.

Insightful- The Flowers in My Mind

San Diego hip hop producer Insightful has just dropped a gem on us. His new album, The Flowers in My Mind, is a 28-track instrumental album full of pure electronic enlightenment that slowly scales buildings built of binary code, blows through gardens of fiber optic flowers, and swirls through the back of your eyelids like blessings from Buddha.

Smooth, sleak, and surreal-- this is what 2011 should sound like.

Beat Maker Beat (aka Spacekid)- Paramind

Russian producer Beat Maker Beat (aka Spacekid) released one of the more underrated records of 2010 in MacroKosmos (peep our coverage here). A few days ago BMB added another flawless 2010 release before the new year cut off, which might sneak him up a few notches on my end of the year list for producers.

Paramind features BMB's signature spaced out production that is always pregnant with fuzzy samples, infectious waves of trippy electronica, and synthesized sex. The free download is below via bandcamp or sharebee. You can also purchase this 19 track banger for 1 measly buck (or more if you wish). It's worth it.

Damu the Fudgemunk- Brooklyn Flower

New instrumental track from blooming DMV based producer, Damu the Fudgemunk. More information on the track is below (if you want more "DIG A LITTLE DEEPER"). Peace to all the sarcastic dinosaurs still roaming the internet.

Brooklyn Flower is a privately commissioned project in conjunction with Slice-of-Spice Records, and ReDef Records. The title track is a reworking of the Ramsey Lewis and Minnie Ripperton versions of the Charles Stepney classic, Les Fleurs. The intention of this track and project is a dedication for the birth of my daughter. These samples, and others deemed relevant, were referenced to Damu The Fudgemunk, when the project was first commissioned in late 2009, and as expected he produced something quite extraordinary and sublime. This is not a track he created for himself, or intended for commercial release.

Pease- Familiar Feelings

A member from Cleveland hip hop group Keyel, Pease (aka Pablo Amor), has just released his latest instrumental project, Familiar Feelings. This 17-track freebie was constructed by Pease during emotionally  inspiring times and hopes the listener can feel his experiences and emotions through his fleeting compositions.

J-Zen- The Sextape

With a stack of dusty VHS tapes, French producer J-Zen has constructed hip hop's first beat tape made of music and vocal samples from 1970's porno films. In between the moans, screaming orgasms, and fuck me in my ass taunts, J-Zen's ability to flip cheesy funk, earthy flutes, and casio stabs into head noddin' hip hop beats is just as astounding as the size of 1970's bush and areola.

Dela- Summer Madness

Dela is quietly having a solid 2010 after his emergence in 2008-2009 with the release of two critically acclaimed mix tapes, Atmosphere Airlines 1 and 2, and debut album, Changes of Atmosphere. On this lastest cut, Dela flips a Kool & The Gang classic and adds a pinch of his signature jazzy flavor that will have you reminiscing of your past summer.

Hexsagon Presents- The Charlie Parker Beat Tape

915-- stand up!

El Paso, Texas born producer, Hexsagon, has channeled the infamous 'Yardbird' Charlie Parker to construct one of better tribute beat tapes to come out in 2010. The Charlie Parker Beat Tape features various loops and samples of Parker's most influential work as one of the greatest jazz saxophonists to ever live. The 14-track beat tape flows seamlessly with beautiful song sequencing, blends, and interview clips with Dizzy Gillespie, Jay McShann, and Chan Parker, making Hexsagon's beat tape a well constructed, cohesive piece of work, rather than a haphazard compilation.

Bei Ru- Sonia

Sampling is archeology. Digging through crates for obscure old records and drafting the sounds of times past into contemporary music is as much about preserving the past as digging for bones is. Few producers take that pursuit as literally as LA native and Armenian beathead Bei Ru, who has traveled across Armenia, Lebanon and Syria on a mission to hunt and rescue rare, out-of-print Armenian 12"s and 45"s from oblivion. He breathes new life into the sounds on those records on Little Armenia (L.A.), an intoxicating voyage through rhythm and melody that serves not only as a dedication to the under-appreciated Armenian musicians of yesteryear and a homage to the Little Armenia section neighborhood of Los Angeles, but also as a musical map of the Armenian diaspora and a wake-up call to his people to take pride in their rich musical history.

Electric instruments and modern sounds began creeping into traditional Armenian music between the 1950s and the 1980s, the era Little Armenia focuses on. These are the songs Bei Ru grew up on, songs he says most Armenians have forgotten. "What inspired me to make this project was all the incredible music I'd find on these old records that most people - even most Armenians - are unaware of," he says. Bei Ru's inspiration to take Armenia's musical past into its future manifests itself in everything from the album's sound to its name. "You walk down a street in the Little Armenia section of Los Angeles, and it's as if the people brought their home country with them. These people, who keep themselves so surrounded by their culture, have forgotten how important the role of music is. Contemporary Armenian music is virtually devoid of any of the aspects of what made those old records so awesome. I felt that Armenians and non-Armenians alike should be exposed to this lost era of music that no one seems to remember."

Beat Tape: Akili- A Beat Tape

I couldn't find much information on the producer known as Akili, but after listening to his new 22-track beat tape I'm dying to find out more (so holler at me if you know any info). A Beat Tape features tons of loops, skits, and interludes that highlight Akili's deep crates, sampling abilities, and sense of humor. The download is yours below for $free.99 via Bandcamp. Damu the Fudgemunk- The Bright Side Remix (Vocal Version)

Here is Damu the Fudgemunk's second promo video for The Bright Side Remix and the free download of the vocal version that Damu considers some of his best work to date.

Damu's highly anticipated record, Supply For Demand, is schedule to release on November 23rd and is available to pre-order on the Re-Definition Records website here.

Beat Maker Beat (aka Space Kid)- Izichu ft. Shawn Jackson & The Need ft. Versis

After the release of his experimental instrumental project MacroKosmos, Russian born beatsmith Beat Maker Beat (aka Space Kid) teamed up with Digi Crates to release Def Joints, a ten track album featuring Space Kid's more 'rappable' production with scattered rhymes from some of California's finest in Shawn Jackson, Rasco, Phil Da Agony, Krondon, and Versis. Combining synth smoked neo-soul, haunting electro boom bap, and bluntquests through Dilla's studio in the sky, Space Kid is an artist that should be on everyone's radar and end of the year producer lists.

Free Beat Tape: SirOJ- Vibeout: Beats 2004-2007

Dutch beatsmith SirOJ has just released a compilation beat tape to celebrate the release of his Castlevania 7". Vibeout: Beats 2004-2007 features the many styles of SirOJ-- synth riddled electro, downtempo, jazzy-- and will give newcomers to OJ or Slumgillion's (OJ's production group) infectious sounds. The only downside to this beat tape is that some of the beats are low quality and the volume levels don't match. As long as it knocks, right? And it does.

Rufio- The Edgewater + Rufio- On & On ft. Chuuwee + The Cove Lounge ft. Haz Solo

While visiting his fellow sound manipulator Haz Solo in Madison, Wisconsin, Sacramento producer Rufio was challenged to make a beat tape during his week long stay at The Edgewater Hotel. The end result is a fourteen track odyssey through showers of distorted synths, blunted abstractions, and streams of seminal sampling featuring a stockpile of talent from Sacramento (KENO, MjH, Illecism, Chuuwee, and C Plus) and Haz Solo himself.

Katrah-Quey- Fifty5 Nine Remix ft. Planet Asia & Prolifical + Sights Targeted at Infatuation

Earlier this year, New Orleans beatsmith Katrah-Quey released his Daybreak, Retrace JPN record on the Japanese Libyus Music imprint featuring Tha Connection, Big Pooh, Preach Jacobs, Planet Asia, and more. After listening to his beautiful multi-layered instrumentals that were heavily drenched in a storm of dreamy keys and frantic jazz drum kits, I was immediately sold that this newcomer could become one of my favorite jazzy producers getting shine in the Land of the Rising Sun. Little did I know that Katrah is no newcomer and has been releasing a plethora of records on various labels and under different monikers since 2005. Known best in some circles for his unprecedented outbursts of high quality work, it's no wonder that Katrah was influenced by the over achieving genius of laboholics like Madlib, Nujabes, Ge-Ology, Kan Kick, and more.

With an MF Doom-esque catalog of material to dig for and sift through, I'll just leave you with what I currently have from the new record. Daybreak, Retrace JPN and his latest EP project with MC Preach Jacobs, Rebel Radio, are available on iTunes/Amazon here and here. I also added an old Juggaknots remix he did for "New Money" off of the Use Your Confusion album.

FreshNerd- The David Bowie Beat Tape

FreshNerd has been killing his series off themed beat tapes so far. He has flipped and mangled classic cuts from Whitney Houston, Cyndi Lauper, Billy Ocean, New Edition, and most recently David Bowie, turning 80's favorites into new millennium madness.

The David Bowie Beat Tape is interesting to say the least. FreshNerd decided to tackle Bowie's 1983 record, Let's Dance, and adds a whole lot of flavor to this early 80's classic. NoseSpray and C.B.J. go hard-- what do you think?

Beat Tape: XL TheRedOne- The Creation

It has been awhile since I've been able to listen to an instrumental album/beat tape all the way through. Most bandcamp beatsmiths seem to be trying way to hard to mirror the Low End Theory style, which usually ends up leaving me with one thing to say after listening: leave it up to the professionals who fathered it.

Moving on.

German producer, XL TheRedOne (who I have decided to nick name Ginger McBluntfingers) released his debut instrumental album, The Creation, earlier this year in affiliation with his Westwood Connection DJ/production crew.  The 26-track beat tape is loaded with Kan Kick like loops and small backwood blunted beams of his potential such as the driving alone at 4am soundtrack Midnight, the blustery Windy City, and flea circus like Circles. Fans of the aforementioned Kanzulu and instrumentals that could be packaged with a box of Nag Champa should click the free download below.
